Call of Duty may not have had the greatest year in 2023, with the launch of Modern Warfare 3 being less than ideal for publisher Activision. The first person shooter sequel was infested with controversial features that fans did not exactly appreciate as much as the studio would have hoped. One of these elements stood out among the rest, which included the addition of open world missions in the third Modern Warfare reboot.

Now, it seems like, although the player base may not have liked it too much, Activision is keen on bringing open-world campaigns back in future titles like Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War.

Open World Campaigns Are Supposedly Returning in Future Call of Duty Titles

Call of Duty campaigns have been quite linear in the past, with little to no real options to take on a mission on one’s own terms, but with Modern Warfare 3, Activision tested something that apparently succeeded in the studio’s eyes. The tradition of adding open world missions to the single-player campaign started with the third Modern Warfare reboot, and Insider Gaming has learned that these will be returning in future games like the next Black Ops instalment.

The developers will apparently convert these open world missions into a full-fledged open-world campaign, which should serve as good news for those who absolutely loathed the short single-player story mode in Modern Warfare 3.

When Modern Warfare 3 was released last year, there was a massive backlash against it due to its short and lazy campaign that clearly took the easy way out and reused assets from Modern Warfare 2. Well, according to sources, the studio has actually put effort into Gulf War‘s campaign as it “has been built from the ground up.” Which means that fans could finally get to experience the CoD franchise in all its previous glory since it is in an extremely rough state currently.

Activision Could Be Completely Revamping CoD Campaigns

Call of Duty fans may finally get the single-player campaigns they deserve and have been waiting for.

What is even more exciting is that the open-world campaign in Gulf War will completely revamp how CoD campaigns have been handled in the past, which could finally be a breath of fresh air for the franchise and just what it needs to win its fanbase back. It seems to be similar to the Far Cry series, complete with vehicles to ride and a highly convenient fast travel system.

The sources also stated that Activision is not abandoning linear missions entirely, as they would still pop up from time to time, but no exact number was given regarding their total quantity.

CoD Black Ops Gulf War is currently in development by two different Activision studios: Raven Software, which is working on the open-world campaign, and Treyarch Games, which is responsible for the Zombies mode.

It is speculated to be released in Fall 2024.
