Ubisoft’s free-to-play first-person shooter title XDefiant has finally launched on May 21, 2024. The title has been dubbed “Call of Duty killer” as it is expected to compete with the popular FPS title, but it seems like the game may not be it as per the reception from players.

The game brings a compiled experience inspired by several online shooter titles, but it is not doing much well so far. Despite this, the game seems to be easily beating one of the most popular shooter titles of 2023, which is already slowly dying and losing its player base on a daily basis.

XDefiant Is Beating One Online Shooter and It’s Not Call of Duty

The game has always been marketed as a Call of Duty competitor, and Ubisoft expects it to be the next big thing in the online shooter arena, but it doesn’t seem like that will happen. The players who have been playing the game have said that it seems like a knockoff or an uninspired “clone” and would not be able to stay relevant for long.

However, the game has managed to beat 2023’s first-person shooter from Embark Studios. Players have said that it is a good game so far, but it is more like The Finals in terms of gameplay and movement.

While it is good, it does not do anything innovative and groundbreaking that would make players pick it above others. As per the fans, the game cannot take over Activision’s game in any way.

They think it would only be able to compete with it in multiplayer as most of the player base in the game is playing battle royale and resurgence modes, and it would die pretty fast like Embark’s game.

XDefiant Takes Over The Finals But Needs to Avoid Its Fate

The game still fares better than The Finals.

The Finals was released last year when it was shadow-dropped at The Game Awards and saw a large number of players turn up to check it out, but it soon started to lose players. The game’s all-time peak came five months ago with 242,619 concurrent players as per SteamDB.

There are only 10,000 players currently playing the game at the time of writing. The last 24-hour peak was a little over 15k players. Ubisoft’s shooter also saw a lot of players trying the game, but there have been several reports of issues that players are facing.

Players have said that the servers are down and they are not able to enter matchmaking. One of the biggest problems the game may face is that it skipped launch on Steam. The game is not available on Steam, and it will be released exclusively for the Ubisoft Connect launcher.

Players have already said that they will not be getting the launcher to play the game. A large chunk of the online player base is on PC, and Ubisoft would have benefited from the release on Steam.
