There are many speculations about Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War regarding its movement mechanics, weapon slots, and many more. But the hottest topic right now is: is it going to feature a Battle Royale mode, just like Warzone?

The History of Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty: Warzone was released in 2020.
Call of Duty: Warzone was released in 2020.

In early 2018, at Infinity Ward’s Woodland Hills Office in California, a historic decision was taken. At that time, when PUBG was taking everyone away with their Battle Royale idea, Patrick Kelly and Dave Stohls, the co-studio heads at Infinity Ward, pitched their big idea regarding a battle royale, but in Call of Duty style.

This project was initially codenamed “Magma,” which was later released as Warzone in 2020. The idea of Kelly and Stohls was to make the biggest and most unique battle royale arena ever. Like in terms of the biggest explorable buildings, contracts, unique geography, and all. And yes, don’t forget Gulag. You don’t get to see too many battle royale games that feature the option to respawn on the battlefield.

However, to make Warzone a reality, Activision had to scrap the idea of Blackout, a battle royale mode that would debut as a part of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This Treyarch title was to be released in 2018, so Blackout was more viable, but Kelly’s idea of a bigger and standalone battle royale game ended the journey of Blackop 4‘s battle royale mode.

Also, Kelly wanted the battle royale game to be a bit more like the Modern Warfare touch, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was to be released in 2019.

It was Treyarch’s dream to introduce the battle royale trend in the world of Call of Duty. But at that time, it was Infinity Ward who made it a reality. However, as things stand, Treyarch’s unfulfilled dream might become true as well. According to recent rumors, we might see a Battle Royale mode in the Gulf War.

Renowned COD insider @alanthethird_90 has recently claimed in his X post that there will be a lot of Black Ops 4 stuff that will be reintroduced in COD 2024, aka Gulf War.

Treyarch has also put the honors of this upcoming title on its shoulders, leaving behind the remaining works of Modern Warfare Zombies. That means there is a high chance that COD fans can immerse themselves in the Battle Royale action of the COD Gulf War in the near future.
