Call of Duty: Warzone is undoubtedly one of the most famous battle royale games currently in the industry. Activision’s idea of turning the fast-paced and arcade-style gameplay of Call of Duty and adding its battle royale spin on it was a massive success. While it enjoys a considerable player following, fans have always complained about it.

Once again, most fans stand united against a feature and voice their opinion on social media. Fans are talking about how the recent covert exfil feature added to the game is not sitting well with them. Fans are arguing about how the studio can even add the feature to the battle royale.

What is the covert exfil feature in Call of Duty Warzone, and why do fans hate it already?

Call of Duty Warzone
Call of Duty Warzone has also received some additions with Season 1 Reloaded.

The community for Warzone has never shied away from expressing their opinions when they find a feature, mechanic, or element within the game worth complaining about. The feature will be rolled out in the Season 1 reload that goes live on January 17 for Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and Zombies players. The blog post announcing it had the following description for the feature:

Players can now exfil the match early with the help of a Covert Exfil, offering a new win condition for those able to pay the price for the ride out – if you can secure it!

It allows players to exit the battlegrounds early if they reach a buying station in time to purchase any of the five covert exfils available in each match. They cost a lot and fly a player out of the station; the most successful exfils are tracked in the game with a dedicated leaderboard.

Call of Duty Warzone
The covert exfil mechanic will not be a traditional win in Call of Duty Warzone.

Players argue that this feature is not required in the game and makes it go in a different direction than initially intended. As per some players, this feature belongs to a different genre of shooters, mainly called Extraction Shooters. Notable examples of the same are Hunt Showdown, Escape from Tarkov, etc. A COD game mode, DMZ, also focused on the genre. This is how fans of the title reacted to the addition of this feature to the game:

Looking at the warzone season reloaded patch notes and seeing no info about the insane exfil mechanic. Hey I can already leave the game early. Hit escape > leave game.

What the hell even is this, that just defeats the whole point of battle royale??

cod will do anything they can to cater to bad players instead of just making a good game

As if I needed another reason to NOT play warzone

There was another information regarding how the mechanic would work; Raven Software published it on their official Twitter handle. It cleared a lot of the misconceptions which users had about the mechanic:

Successfully extracting via Covert Exfil does not count as a traditional win – rather as a separate stat – and will not count towards Champion’s Quest progress. More details and design intent will be provided in the patch notes next week!

It certainly makes sense to ensure that the exfil mechanic doesn’t count as a real win because if it were the other way around, it would have been a bane to the title. While the fact that the mechanic and its successful execution will count as a separate statistic from a traditional win, it makes sense to ask the question of whether the mechanic belongs to a title in the BR genre.

On the contrary, other people weren’t totally against the addition of covert exfils to the title:

warzone was built on innovation and this is a new change. my understanding from reading the tweets was that it is a single weapon case per game, allowing a single exfil

If you are a BR purist then Warzones Loadouts where a new thing added to the BR game mode. Im pretty sure Warzone 2 at launch was more closer to a normal BR than WZ3? It wasn’t great though and played horrible. So adding some extras into it maybe cool

Some players also exclaimed that the fact that Warzone had the Gulag and the loadout system also means that the game isn’t a very traditional BR game. And if players enjoy these mechanics in the title, they may also grow to like the covert exfils. The feature hasn’t been rolled out yet, and not even the Patch Notes are available for one to check out. Only after the feature is rolled out can one view it objectively.
