Activision president Rob Kostich appeared for an interview with VentureBeat earlier this week where he talked about the first 20 years of Call of Duty and the future of the series among several other things. Kostich was asked how they plan a comeback if they are unable to release a game one year or if the sales are lesser than previous years or not as expected.

Kostich said that they have learned something from every game in the franchise and there is a large group all around the world that tells developers what they think about the series and Activision pays attention to it. To put the plans for the next Call of Duty games, Kostich stated,

“We’re constantly in our planning phase, our long-term planning phase. Right now, we have games planned out all the way through ’27 for the things that we’re working on.”

He added that they have done several games in the future and Activision has gone as far as it possibly could. He further stated that it takes time for developers to know what the community expects from the developers. He said,

“You start to see the sweet spot over time and what really resonates with the community. You see things like the Modern Warfare and Black Ops franchises are really popular. We’ve certainly had some other games that have done really well, like the original World War II game from Sledgehammer in 2017 did really, really well as well.”

It is quite right as COD initially focused on WW2 but the game came out of this major world event’s shadow post-launch of the Modern Warfare series, which saw a huge boost in the popularity of the game. The Black Ops titles are set in the Cold War era as well as the future and Infinite Warfare is set in the future.

Rob Kostich was also asked about the number of developers and studios working on Call of Duty titles at Activision right now. VentureBeat stated that over 2000 developers were working on COD games from 10 studios, which is a huge number of developers no matter how well-streamlined and structured development is. To this, Kostich remarked,

“It’s 3,000. Like I said, these games are quite labor-intensive now. You see everyone doing this, all the big games are – quite big teams are trying to pull these things together. They’re monumental efforts. Competition is real, and so we’re just focused on, again, just how we can deliver our players’ expectations, and to do so nowadays, it takes a lot more than it used to back in the day.”

Kostich revealed that there is one developer that leads and other developers are more of a helping hand supporting the lead studio as it requires more work when things like seasons are being planned. He said it takes more people now to make these games but their focus has not changed.

Players can only look forward to Modern Warfare 3 for now as it launches on November 10, 2023, and wait for Call of Duty: Next when Activision could reveal what’s next for the popular franchise. The next Call of Duty game is allegedly a Black Ops title focusing on the Gulf War.
