Barbie was the most anticipated film of 2023, becoming one of the most successful films and the most successful female-directed film of all time. The film featured an exceptional and complex storyline, which though may have gone over the heads of a few, left the majority of its audiences with a new perspective after they left the theater. Along with this, the film also had an incredibly unexpected and impressive cast.

Michael Cera Was Asked To Be A Part Of Barbie

Michael Cera is an exceptionally talented actor, who has made a name for himself through his work in famous works like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Superbad, Juno, and This Is the End. Being as famous as he is, it is only natural that the actor’s manager has to regularly attend calls from people asking him to be part of their films. So much so, that he may even have to make some decisions on their own.

This seemed to have been a bad thing as Cera almost lost the opportunity to work in Barbie after the actor’s manager received a phone call, asking him to be part of Greta Gerwig’s film. Cera’s manager was told that the shooting would be in London and did not think that the actor wanted to go to London for a film. As a way to lower their expectations, not thinking that Cera would say yes to the film, the manager told them not to get their hopes up about his involvement in the project.

Michael Cera Was Outraged After Hearing This

After Michael Cera found out about this, he was so completely confused, telling his manager that he obviously wanted to be part of Barbie and to call them back immediately. The actor explained that there was no way that he would let this opportunity go away, stating that he needed to do this film. The actor even took things into his own hands and found Greta Gerwig’s email address through a mutual friend.

“And she was like, ‘Let’s get on a Zoom right now. Here’s a Zoom link, I’ll be on there for the next hour.’ So she was just hanging out on Zoom, like, ‘Click the link whenever you’re ready.’ And then we talked about it, and it just all happened really fast from there.” he stated.

Cera wrote a message to the director, explaining how badly he wanted to be part of the film and particularly play the role of Allan. The director responded to his message, asking him to join a Zoom meeting where they could discuss the film together, after which, things progressed very quickly for the actor.
