Take any random film directed by Zack Snyder, and hordes of his fans will probably argue that the theatrical ‘cut’ falls short of capturing the true brilliance of the director. From the much-discussed Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) to the director’s extended take on Watchmen (2009), the director’s cuts are arguably even more beloved than the theatrical versions.
Although he is now able to release his favorite versions of most of his films thanks to his devoted fan base, Snyder still has one more film he’d like to try. According to Snyder, who recently spoke with Empire, he is still not satisfied with the way his 2011 flick Sucker Punch turned out, and thus, he still wants to “fix” it. Well, it seems fans might need to exercise some patience.
Could Zack Snyder’s Cut Save Sucker Punch?
Given that Zack Snyder has shown a willingness to experiment with different edits of his films, it should come as no surprise that there are two versions of Sucker Punch in addition to an extended cut (see Screen Rant). The Emily Browning and Abbie Cornish starrer was not a hit at the box office and received negative reviews when it was released in 2011 (Rotten Tomatoes).
Nonetheless, the film has a devoted fan base and has merited further consideration in the years that have passed, much like many of Snyder’s controversial films. According to Comic Book Debate, the director, 58, acknowledged that Sucker Punch was satirical to a greater extent than most people realized.
Over the years, the 300 director has expressed his desire quite vocally to release his Sucker Punch directorial cut, and he remains interested in doing so. When asked recently about one of his films that he would like to see changed, he said that Sucker Punch is the only one because “it never really got finished correctly”.
Snyder told Empire:
“The only movie I would change is Sucker Punch because it never really got finished correctly. Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie. I have the footage already shot. They just have to let me put it together.”
He explained that the director’s cut is simply an extended version and that the footage for his cut has already been shot; all he needs is permission from the studio to assemble it.
Zack Snyder’s Latest Statement Sparks Outrage Among Fans
Known for his cinematic aesthetic and distinctive approach to storytelling, Zack Snyder has a dedicated fan base that has stood by him in the face of both praise and criticism. Even so, his most devoted followers are beginning to lose patience following his recent remarks regarding ‘fixing’ his 2011 flick, Sucker Punch.
Many people have taken to X to express their disappointment and frustrations. Here are some of the remarks that a few of them have made:
Can he ever just make a movie and put it out?
Enough of these constant fan campaigns and different cuts!
I get one or two because then that is a special event, but I am starting to think this is part of his plan every time a movie goes into production.

What is the backstory of the Snyder cut on Sucker Punch? Despite having an actual budget of $82 million, the film failed to impress at the box office (see Box Office Mojo). The movie made $89.7 million after going into theaters, which was hardly enough to cover its cost. This suggests that Warner Bros. suffered financial losses on the film as a result of its appalling box office results.
Starring Emily Browning as ‘Babydoll’, the film has also garnered a resounding negative reception. Sadly, the movie has a 22% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score is 47%.
Sucker Punch ( 2011) is available to rent on Apple TV.
