Taika Waititi has offered a glimpse into his vision for Thor 5, expressing his aspiration to introduce a “formidable” antagonist to the upcoming installment. While the confirmation of a fifth film in the franchise, following the footsteps of 2022’s Love And Thunder, remains pending, the director has nonetheless provided speculative insights into his potential directions.

Will Taika Waititi Continue To Make Thor Look Like A Clown

Taika Waititi discussed the remaining steps for the character, emphasizing the need for a progression that aligns with the character’s development. This involves introducing new elements that challenge him, contributing to his growth in an entertaining and engaging manner, while also continuing to present obstacles reflective of his journey to conquer.

“What is left to do to him?” the director said. “It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela (Cate Blanchett). I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable.”

Waititi intends to spotlight the progression of Chris Hemsworth’s character, which has been widely debated since Love and Thunder. The fourth film saw Taika Waititi transforming Thor into a more comical figure. This approach was well-received in Thor: Ragnarok, yet it was taken to an excessive level in the fourth installment. Waititi envisions the upcoming Thor 5 to delve even further into this theme. However, this approach poses a challenge. Straying away from the desire for a whimsical Thor, a character who, as the mightiest Avenger, should embody his strength in demeanor and action, is crucial.

Furthermore, he elaborated on this notion, explaining that Thor’s character carries a sense of enjoyment and ease in his demeanor. This casualness and self-assured presence come to the forefront as he traverses different realms and interacts with diverse aliens. Waititi emphasized that this distinctive charm and swagger would be lacking if the protagonist were a terrestrial human venturing through space to explore the vast expanse of the universe.

“There’s a fun element to [Thor] and he has a casualness and a sort or swagger about him when he visits these worlds and encounters these aliens that I don’t think you’d get when it’s an earthling travelling through space exploring the universe.”

Following its debut, Thor: Love And Thunder entered the ranks of the lowest-rated films within the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe.
