Jeremy Allen White may have controlled himself while meeting his favorite celebrities in real life–being a celebrity himself now–but that wasn’t quite the case with his mom: especially while meeting Cate Blanchett. And it all started at the SAG Awards.

Having recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he shared how, while on his way to the SAG Awards with his mother, he sensed his mom was quite nervous and tried to calm her nerves down:

“I was like, ‘Hey, what’s going on? Like, what’s the worst that could happen? What are you so nervous about?’ She’s like, ‘Well, what if I meet somebody I really admire?’”

Since there was a huge chance of that happening considering how there are A-listers on the red carpets in such events, Allen White then asked his mom whom she was thinking of in particular.

“She’s like, ‘I don’t know. Cate Blanchett. Like, if I met Cate Blanchett, I feel like I would lose it.’ I was like, ‘I’m sure we’re not going to see Cate Blanchett, don’t worry.’ So, we’re in the line to do the red carpet and Cate is like six people ahead of us.”

The Bear star had never met her in real life, but because he had done Fingernails that the actress produced, Blanchett recognized him and started making her way to him.

“She makes eye contact with me, she beelines it to my mother and I, and my mother starts sobbing uncontrollably. For reasons I don’t really understand. And so Cate was like really excited to see me and really concerned for my mother. [She was] trying to fix it, and my mother’s trying to explain that nothing’s really wrong, [saying,] ‘It’s just your beauty and grace and presence that’s making me sob.’”

Turns out Cate Blanchett‘s aura is even strong enough to make someone sob uncontrollably on the red carpet!

Jeremy Allen White then shared how he usually blacks out in red carpet appearances. The same happened when he was on the red carpet for The Iron Claw, and that’s when the tragedy struck: he said something ‘dumb’ that led his parents to call him a day before Thanksgiving.

“I get a call a day before Thanksgiving and my folks are like, ‘Hey, what are you doing for Thanksgiving?’ I say, ‘Oh, I’m going to Michael and Wendy’s, I’m cooking this, what are you guys doing?’ And they were like, ‘Well, we would be cooking, but we can’t cook.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And they were like, ‘Well, we read that you said that your parents don’t know how to cook.’”

As it turned out, Allen White had accidentally said something like ‘my parents didn’t really do that’ when asked if he grew up in a household where people cooked, during the flurry of interviews on the red carpet. And since his folks followed him on Twitter, they found out all about it.

Nonetheless, trying to make it up to them, the After Everything star said:

“Truth is, Mom, I know you’re all about the New York Times recipes, I know you’re trying really hard. They are. And they’re good at so many other things. They really, really are. I love you guys.”

Well, they can’t really be mad at him after that sweet little appreciation note, right?
