A majority of the movies that Charlize Theron has starred in have been spectacular masterpieces, with most of her performances earning critical acclamation.

However, there still rests one film — a novel-based live-action adaptation, at that — which failed to appeal to audiences the same way as her other projects. This movie was none other than Dark Places, the 2015 film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s original novel.

But the movie’s notable failure wasn’t one to stop Flynn from recreating her project in a better manner under more creative control, according to recent news.

Yes, that is true: The author is all set to write the script for a whole new adaptation of Dark Places; though this time, it would be in the form of an HBO miniseries. And fans’ reactions to this news are surprisingly unexpected, especially after the Charlize Theron-starrer’s failure.

As reported exclusively by Variety, Gillian Flynn is back on track to do justice to her one and only book that failed to get a proper live-action adaptation, i.e. Dark Places, by serving as the co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner on the project.

To be developed into a “limited series” by HBO this time, the miniseries would see Brett Johnson and Guerrin Gardner acting as the co-creators and writers, with Johnson having an additional responsibility as its co-showrunner.

Reportedly, Theresa Kang and Caroline Garity from Blue Marble Pictures as well as Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi from Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment would be serving as the Executive Producers of this project.

While previously, Flynn’s 2015 movie, based on the novel, starring Charlize Theron in the lead, was more or less a disaster judging from the brutal criticism it received, this time, the HBO miniseries could be expected to be better since the author will have more creative control over this one.

What’s more, is that the live-action adaptations of Gone Girl and Sharp Objects (both of which are two other remarkable works by Gillian Flynn) into a film and an HBO miniseries further serve as a testament to the author’s incredibility since both of these projects were massive successes under her control.

Thus, perhaps, this new version of a live-action project by author Gillian Flynn just might be way better than the mystery thriller story of Libby Day portrayed in the Dark Places movie starring Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, and distributed by A24 Films in 2015.

Since the movie adaptation of Dark Places wasn’t one of the finest ones there is, judging from its terrible reviews and even worse box office performance (it grossed only $5.1 million on an $11.9 million budget, as per The Numbers) many would have expected fans to be wary of a miniseries adaptation as well.

However, that is hardly the case, considering how fans are simply rejoicing at this news.

This time, since Gillian Flynn will have more creative control over the content, fans are looking at this as an opportunity to “erase” the terrible movie that Charlize Theron, unfortunately, got to star in. Taking to X, here are similar thoughts they are echoing:

Considering all these fan reactions, if these reports are indeed true and Gillian Flynn is actually going forward to do her splendid novel justice, then fans just might be in for a sweet chilling treat with the HBO miniseries Dark Places.
