Chris Evans Almost Made the War Cry 4 Years Before Avengers: Endgame

According to MCU: The Reigns of Marvel Studios, Chris Evans‘ character Steve Rogers aka Captain America almost said “Avengers Assemble!” at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the film cut to black before he could finish his sentence. Kevin Feige and his team of filmmakers made the mindful choice to wait until their largest film to release that battle cry, even though they had plenty of previous chances to do so.

“A fight scene in an Avengers comic book almost always included the rallying cry ‘Avengers assemble!’ – but when Chris Evans’s Captain America started to say that phrase, director Joss Whedon coyly cut him off midsentence as the credits rolled on Avengers: Age of Ultron. Nobody in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would say it onscreen until Avengers: Endgame, the twenty-second MCU film.”

After the Avengers beat Ultron and everything was in order, Captain America was tasked to train the ones standing. Just before Chris Evans’ Captain America is about to exclaim, “Avengers Assemble!” the movie ends. This cliffhanger ending was a way for the filmmakers to tease fans with the chance of Captain America saying his iconic line, but also to build anticipation for the next Avengers film.
