The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought multiple superheroes to the big screen, where they have been transformed into timeless characters that viewers have watched for countless hours. But there is one towering character that never fails to astound audiences: the powerful Thor, played by the charming Chris Hemsworth. His massive screen time in the MCU has surpassed the duration of Phase Five’s The Marvels (105 minutes), a shocking revelation that cements his dominance even more.
As the God of Thunder, Hemsworth, 40, has ruled the MCU screen time of 289.8 minutes from his thunderous debut in Thor to his crucial role in Avengers: Endgame. Counting down the times he has appeared in the MCU, it is obvious that his interpretation of the Asgardian superhero is legendary.
The Runtime of The Marvels Stands Shorter Than Chris Hemsworth’s MCU Screen Time
With his powerful hammer, Mjolnir, Chris Hemsworth plays the fictional character Thor Odinson, also known as the God of Thunder, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The actor first played the character in the 2011 flick of the same name. Kenneth Branagh’s film was a financial success, bringing in $449.3 million worldwide, and critics gave it generally positive reviews. It was thus followed by three releases of the sequels: Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Most recently, the Australian actor reprised the character in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).
Well, that’s not just enough. Upon tallying his multiple MCU appearances, it is evident that Hemsworth’s interpretation of the Asgardian superhero is a legendary one. Having appeared on the MCU screen for 289.8 minutes in total, he has won over fans all over the world and solidified his status as a true Marvel heavyweight. This exceeded even the entire run of The Marvels.
While Nia DaCosta’s $202.5 million film has a respectable 105-minute runtime, Hemsworth’s massive screen time establishes him as the undisputed MCU protagonist.
How Long Has Chris Hemsworth Wanted to Play Thor?
Over ten years have passed since Chris Hemsworth took on the role of Thor in Marvel films. His most recent appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder left the possibility of more adventures in the works. Thus, he was asked about his intentions to pick up Thor’s hammer once again when EW interviewed the Australian actor for his Extraction 2 cover story. The actor said he has “no idea”, while further adding:
“I’ve got to be careful how I word that because I have no idea what’s happening in the next phase. There’s always conversations, like with Extraction. Before anything is official, people are throwing around ideas. But officially, I don’t know.”
Thor is also the only Marvel character to have four solo films. Although Hemsworth said he enjoys playing the part, he wants to keep experimenting with genre and style if he makes another Thor movie. Stated differently, he wanted to keep it “a little unpredictable.”
“I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.”
The amount of screen time Hemsworth has in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is evidence of his exceptional abilities and dedication to the role of Thor.
Hemsworth will next be seen in the post-apocalyptic action-adventure film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which George Miller co-produced and directed. It is the fifth movie in the Mad Max series and both a prequel and a spin-off of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
