Christopher Judge, the voice behind Kratos has been highly praised for his performance of the iconic Kratos in the God of War games. Before 2018’s God of War games, young Kratos was originally voiced by Terrence C. Carson and Carson made the character his own with fantastic performance across titles.

The newly released God of War Ragnarök Valhalla DLC saw both young and aged Kratos come face to face but young Kratos did not have any dialogues. Judge has now revealed that it was because he refused to voice the young character due to his “reverence” for Carson.

Many players who have played all the God of War games must have thought of the day when both young and old Kratos would come across each other and this came true to some extent in God of War Ragnarök Valhalla DLC. The expansion brought both versions of Kratos as he came face to face with his past. The young Kratos shown in the DLC was silent and did not speak anything.

It has now been revealed by Judge that it is because he chose not to voice the young character out of respect for the original actor. YouTuber AbdBay posted a brief video on his YouTube channel where he asked Judge about Terrence Carson’s portrayal of the character in Greek mythology compared to his portrayal of the character in Norse Mythology.

Judge said he did out of respect for original voice actor Terrence Carson.

Judge highly praised Carson’s performance and said he never wanted to match Carson but wanted to make the character his own. He further added that he was contacted for the role where it was required him to match the voice of young Kratos like Carson but he refused to do so because it would have been disrespectful to his legacy. Judge stated:

I never watched any of the scenes from the earlier ones because TC is so great and I thought it would be a disservice to try to voice-match him. From the very beginning, it was about making it my own and TC is so extraordinary that my reverence for what he did, even if they had asked I would have said no.

I was actually offered something not too long ago and I had to turn it down because they wanted me to somewhat match the voice of the character and I said absolutely not.

Kratos has one of the best character arcs in video games with every title adding a bit of depth to the character. The original God of War games were designed by David Jaffe where Kratos is a rage-filled warrior hell-bent on revenge but 2018’s God of War title saw a huge change and portrayed Kratos as an older, very wise, and measured individual.

Terrence C. Carson voiced Kratos in the original God of War games before Judge took on the role. It can not be said for certain if the role that Judge is talking about was for the DLC or something else but he refused to do it out of respect for the original voice actor. Both the actors have been brilliant in portraying the character in different stages of his life.

Recently, there have been rumors that a remaster of the first three God of War games might be in development for PlayStation 5 and if it’s true, it is possible that Judge could have been contacted to voice Kratos for the remaster. Although nothing has been confirmed as of now, there is always a possibility since players have been requesting a remaster of the trilogy for a long time.

Moreover, even if the remaster is in the works, Christopher Judge is not going to be in the games so it is also possible that Carson might make a return to take on the iconic role of Kratos. However, it is recommended to take everything with a grain of salt until PlayStation and Sony confirm.
