Cruise recently signed a deal under which he is expected to develop, produce, and star in original and franchise films at Warner Bros. It has also heightened expectations, especially for one of Cruise’s projects that has been stuck in production limbo for nearly a decade.
Released in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow is one of his best original movies and has long been a topic of discussion regarding a sequel. Despite years of speculation, no concrete developments have emerged for the sequel. However, Nolan’s style, directorial tendencies, and his openness to diverse projects after Oppenheimer present a promising opportunity for an incredible collaboration for a highly anticipated sequel.
Christopher Nolan is Perfect to Direct Edge of Tomorrow 2
Christopher Nolan has consistently garnered critical acclaim for his unique directorial style and techniques. Whether it’s practical effects, scientific subject matter, action, suspense, or the creative use of time, he has emphasized it all in his filmography. And Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow also deals with similar aspects, making Nolan the perfect filmmaker to work on its sequel.
While the original film was helmed by Cruise’s frequent collaborators Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie, it seems unlikely for them to take on the directorial role for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel as well. Liman’s involvement is uncertain, and McQuarrie is now committed to the eighth and potentially final film in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Nolan’s collaboration with Emily Blunt, who co-starred in the 2014 sci-fi action film, also provides an opportunity to establish a working relationship with Tom Cruise for the much-anticipated sequel and potentially resolve their alleged feud that started from competition for IMAX screens between Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
It remains uncertain if Christopher Nolan and Cruise will join forces to work on Edge of Tomorrow 2. However, the Oscar-nominated director’s openness to various projects after Oppenheimer and willingness to explore diverse opportunities could potentially breathe new life into the Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
Christopher Nolan Is Open to Explore Diverse Opportunities
During an interview with Variety, Christopher Nolan revealed his post-Oppenheimer plans. And the filmmaker has shared that he is open to exploring a diverse array of projects as long as he feels a deep sense of ownership and connection to what he’s working on.
“I’ve done a remake, I’ve made adaptations from comic books and novels, and I’ve written original screenplays. I’m open to anything. But as a writer and director, whatever I do, I have to feel like I own it completely.”
He also acknowledged that the “initial seed of an idea” could come externally, but it would be his creative journey that transforms it into something that is distinctly his own, highlighting that he still needs to maintain artistic integrity and a personal connection to the material.
The filmmaker also addressed a potential reunion with Warner Bros. Nolan cut ties with the studio due to its hybrid model of releasing a film in theatres and on streaming together. When asked about his return to Warner Bros., during the interview, he said, “Oh yeah, absolutely,” before praising Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and his movie chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.
Considering his positive remarks and potential reunion with Warner Bros and eagerness to explore more diverse projects leaves hope for exciting developments for the much-anticipated sequel to Edge of Tomorrow to be directed by Nolan.
