Costumes are a big part of what makes the final product in a film production worth watching. Emily Blunt has had her fair share of experiences with costumes, given how important her character was in The Devil Wears Prada. while Nolan’s films mandate that their actors wear their costumes to the set, one fashion choice by Blunt had her thinking she was right back working with Meryl Streep.

Emily Blunt’s character in Oppenheimer is that of Kitty Oppenheimer,  J Robert Oppenheimer’s wife. Like all of Nolan’s films, actors on set were expected to arrive in their costumes, ready to play their respective characters. Apart from this, Nolan also makes a great deal of effort to make sure that whatever he is shooting is as authentic as possible.

Similarly, Oppenheimer, instead of filing in some sort of a studio was filmed on location. In this case, that location ended up being New Mexico, not far from where the real-life Oppenheimer had set up shop with other scientists to work on Project Manhattan. Given how unforgiving the weather was, the actress decided to bend the rules of the set a little so that she was better able to adjust to the shooting location.

When Emily Blunt decided to wear Ugg boots to set, Nolan’s silent judgment gave the actress an odd reality check, taking her back to her time working with Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. Recalling the day she wore the boots to work, the actress revealed in the behind-the-scenes book “Unleashing Oppenheimer”:

“It was like a scene from ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ Chris just looks down at your shoes and it’s like Meryl Streep is looking at your horrible fashion choice. I just thought, I’ll never be seen dead in Ugg boots around him again.”

No doubt the experience rattled Blunt ever so little, but it is a thought that would probably come to haunt the actress again in the future. However, there is some comfort to be taken from such stories about fashion icons like Emily Blunt, who themselves can sometimes make bad fashion choices, giving hope to those who are conscious bout their dressing sense.
