New set photos of Superman offer the first looks at one of the well-known antiheroes that will be featured in James Gunn’s DC Universe film. The first film in the upcoming DC Universe franchise, David Corenswet’s Superman, finally entered production in late February. Along with featuring a young Man of Steel, the much-awaited flick will also feature other superheroes who help shape the larger DC Universe.

Eventually, the first set of photos from the upcoming movie has recently made its way online, albeit without the Man of Steel himself. That being said, the images feature María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer. The Venezuelan actress, 31, is seen in a black uniform on the set of the movie.

Fans, however, were quick to voice their displeasure when set photos were posted online, as the actress-singer did not quite look like her comic book character, ‘The Engineer’.

María Gabriela de Faría is clad as Angela Spica/The Engineer in the first pictures from James Gunn’s Superman set to surface. Although David Corenswet is not seen as the Man of Steel in these images, they do offer us a first look at the Deadly Class actress, who is set to assume the role of The Engineer. Check out the images below:

The actress, 31, was spotted filming a scene while wearing a black leather outfit and harness, probably for a fight sequence. For the unversed, The Engineer, also known as Angela Spica, is a member of The Authority, a supergroup, in the comic books. Because she has nanites in her bloodstream, she has a metallic-liquid body and can use this metal alloy to create solid objects.

However, the leaked photos of de Faría revealed a stark contrast to this depiction. Instead of the expected fierce build and demeanor, the actress looked somewhat unassuming and more…human-like. And fans didn’t quite like the new look.

Fans Disappointed with DCU’s The Engineer’s First Look

If there was one thing that DC has consistently been better at than Marvel, it was costume design. Be it Henry Cavill’s Kryptonian ensemble or Black Adam’s magical garb, each costume had a lot of depth and thought interwoven within its fabric. However, the newest leaks from the set of Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) might let down a number of fans who prefer comic book accuracy.

According to the set leaks, María Gabriela de Faría’s The Engineer is a far cry from her comic book counterpart. This has caused outrage among the fans, who are not taking this change kindly. Instead of her biomechanical stature, The Engineer looked a lot more human/organic in James Gunn’s Superman. And the lack of that silvery design might also hint at a different origin story for The Authority’s machinist.

DC fans took to Twitter (formerly X) to express their concerns about the altered look:

It remains uncertain, thus, whether these specific skills will be available to the character when she makes her feature film debut. Hopefully, María Gabriela de Faría will gain further resemblance to her comic book character, which might steer the already controversial DCU somewhat in the right direction.

Superman will be out in theatres on July 11, 2025.
