Conan O’Brien has hosted his share of celebrities on his talk show. This means, that sooner or later, O’Brien gets the chance to meet all his favorite stars. However, O’Brien lost out a chance to meet with Bob Dylan, and it was because another celebrity came calling his name.
Speaking on his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, the former TV show host relayed his story involving the Vice President of the United States and Bob Dylan, and how one prevented him from meeting the other.
Conan O’Brien almost met Bob Dylan
On the podcast, O’Brien said that he was attending a Bob Dylan concert with his good friend Jimmy Vivino, and they had a chance to go backstage. Vivino was a good friend of O’Brien’s, being his show’s band leader and “an amazing guitar player”. O’Brien, at that point, had been hosting his show, Conan, for quite some time. He had appeared on television and was considerably well known.
What followed was, due to some disturbance and the crowd shoving the TV anchor, O’Brien ended up directly in front of the famous singer/ songwriter. Dylan was fairly famous at the time of the incident, leaving O’Brien slightly starstruck and at a loss of words. However, Dylan took one look at O’Brien, and in his iconic style said:
“Hey, I know you from the TV!”
Having struck a conversation starter with the End of the Line singer, O’Brien felt confident in talking to him. However, there was something completely different in the cards for the late-night talk show host, as before he could talk, he was called away by Al Gore, Former Vice President of the United States under Bill Clinton.
A Former Vice President Interrupted Conan O’Brien
Just as O’Brien was ready to talk to Dylan, the Tonight Show host heard his name being called. He turned to see that it was the former Vice President of the United States of America, Al Gore. Gore was excited to talk to O’Brien, who in turn wanted to get a few words in with Dylan. However, by the time O’Brien had the time to turn to start a conversation with Dylan, the singer was gone, leaving O’Brien frustrated about the entire ordeal. The host stated,
“Yeah, Al Gore is cool and everything but Bob Dylan? And then i turned around and Bob Dylan was like “Gotta go” and ran away, and I was c***kbloked by the Vice President of the United States, and I never saw Bod Dylan again! It just rins in my head “I know you from the TV””
O’Brien never got the chance to meet Bob Dylan again, with just the phantom of a conversation lingering in his brain. O’Brien regales the interaction every chance he gets because while it would have been an absolute honor talking to Al Gore, seemingly little compares to the late-night show host’s wish to talk to singing legend Bob Dylan, and rightly so.
