Kingsman: The Secret Service Church Scene Raised Concerns
There’s no denying that Matthew Vaughn‘s Kingsman franchise has entertained audiences with its thrilling moments and intense action scenes. But what if we say one of the iconic action scenes was almost edited from the 2014 Kingsman: The Secret Service? Yes, according to the director, the studio was concerned about the memorable church scene.
The hell-raising church fight scene from 2014 Kingsman: The Secret Service that featured Oscar winner Colin Firth was the scene that concerned the studio. According to Matthew Vaughn who spoke about it during his appearance on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, the studio believed that it might hurt the sentiments of people. In short, the studio was worried the movie might face backlash due to one scene.
Matthew Vaughn noted during the podcast how the church sequence was one of the very first scenes he shot while filming Kingsman: The Secret Service. But unfortunately, just days before the film was about to hit the theatres, Vaughn was begged to cut the scene. Vaughn revealed how was constantly pushed by the studio to remove the scene to stay on the safe side.
Matthew Vaughn Was Pushed to Edit the Scene From the Film
Appearing on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, Matthew Vaughn who recently released his 2024 spy parody Argylle featuring Henry Cavill, recalled his 2014 Kingsman movie. Discussing how passionately he shot the scene which ended up being one of the most memorable sequences from the film, Vaughn revealed how he almost edited it out due to the studio’s pressure.
“That was the first thing we shot on Kingsman. You start with a tricky, big scene, it clears the pipes and we’re in it, and you’ve got to concentrate. We’re also not exhausted, so we’ve got a chance at maybe making it work. But the thing about the church sequence, the studio was begging me to cut it three days before the film came out.”
Revealing how he was pushed by the studio a few days before the film’s release to edit the scene, Matthew Vaughn then narrated what he did. Rebelling against the studio, Vaughn stood his ground and left the scene as it is in the movie. Thankfully, the director was right about the scene, it eventually ended up being one of the most iconic scenes in the entire franchise.
“They were all very worried about it. And when a lot of people [would] say, ‘Ah, you shouldn’t have this sequence in the movie.’ Creative opinion is… everyone’s right and everybody’s wrong. What some people love, other people hate. But it is what it is: that’s art. And a lot of people were telling me, ‘You can’t have the church sequence,’ so there was a moment where I was like, ‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t put it in the movie. But, in the end, I went, ‘Nah, I really like it, I’m keeping it in.’”
Could’ve been the biggest fumble of the 21st century

Without a doubt the best scene in the entire film. Would’ve been a MONUMENTAL mistake.

well thank god that they didn’t

This is literally why studios need to stop overstepping when it comes to making films. This is one of the best scenes and to have cut that would've been crazy.
