The launch of Counter Strike 2 has re-imagined one of the most popular competitive shooters and helped it grow even more popular thanks to new visuals, cosmetics, and the inclusion of several quality-of-life changes.
One of these changes includes how players experience the game’s iconic loot box system. Previously, things would be based on pure luck and tons of money players could invest into these. However, going forward, things are going to change drastically.
Valve Has Introduced a New ‘Renting’ System to Weapon Cases
In Counter Strike 2, weapon cases are traditional loot boxes that work on a randomized system. This system rewards players for purchasing cases/keys that let them earn a cosmetic item such as weapon skins or even a knife (for melee combat).
As it turns out, the latest update has introduced a new way to experience this. Instead of only receiving these items permanently, or being able to purchase them from the community market, players will now have the option of renting them.
By renting weapon skins, players can enjoy the experience of almost owning it, but only for a limited time. The fascinating angle to this remains: will other players even know that the player has rented this skin? Well, they won’t be able to tell.
This caters to a controversy that cosmetics will simply lose their charm now, considering how purchasing one would be meaningless and lose its value in the long run.
How Does Renting Work in Counter Strike 2?
If you wish to try this out, you’ll need two things: a case key that helps you unlock the specific case with your favorite skins. And, a rentable case. Once you have those in your inventory, simply unlock the case and choose the option that says, “unlock container.”
Doing so gives you access to all items in the case for seven days. So, feel free to show these cosmetics off for the next seven days until the items go back to being locked behind a paywall. Even though short-lived, renting cases gives players a chance to see how certain cosmetics look and feel in the game in case they wish to purchase something from the community market.
In the past, people have spent mammoth amounts of money on in-game skins in Counter Strike 2. This kind of behavior isn’t going away anytime soon, but one can hope that Valve’s new quality of life update can help players better track their spending by renting items instead of purchasing everything.
Only time will tell how the community responds to this change, and whether it’s a good concept for loot boxes in general across several online games.
