Starfield continues to have players question the lore and overall narrative. The open-world action RPG does have a story to drive the player from one planet to another. But how did we get to this point in the timeline? More importantly, is Earth involved in any way?

To build up Starfield’s lore before release, Bethesda dropped a timeline starting from 2050 to 2330 where Starfield’s story begins. The timeline breaks down key moments such as when humans first arrived on Mars to the Constellation’s accomplishments.

Earth is not explicitly talked about throughout the timeline and is only mentioned once in the beginning. Once humans started living in space in 2100, they would later arrive in Alpha Centauri in 2156. This is 4.37 light years away from Earth to give players perspective on how far humanity has moved. Without Earth mentioned at all, are we looking for a new home? Or are we trying to save it?

In Starfield, Earth is Dead?

While Starfield players are settling in at New Atlantis, where's Earth?

Starfield has been out for about five months now. Despite the title receiving little to no recognition at The Game Awards, players are still enjoying Starfield daily. The massive open-world exploration in space is enough to draw in nearly 10,000 players daily according to SteamDB. You don’t need to take over the gaming industry to keep players engaged.

Bethesda is known for building lore in their games, notably Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series. Starfield’s lore has yet to pique many gamers’ interest. While it is a time-sinker, exploring the thousands of planets Starfield has to offer, what is the goal here?

Why are we exploring this section of the galaxy light years away from Earth? Was Earth destroyed and that’s why we’re here? Or are we simply looking for resources to hopefully recover the planet we call home? All of this and more have yet to be answered in Starfield’s lore.

Some Theories on Earth’s Fate in Starfield

Will the fate of Earth be unveiled in Starfield's lore?
Will the fate of Earth be unveiled in Starfield’s lore?

If Bethesda were to explore what happened to Earth in Starfield, they have multiple angles to go from. The easy one would be to declare Earth as uninhabitable, whether it’s from human’s own doing (pollution, lack of resources, etc.) or aliens have invaded. If anything reasonable as to why humans had to leave their blue and green homes, I believe players would buy into it.

The more complicated but more interesting theory would have the Constellation eventually return to Earth in hopes of recovering what’s left of the planet. Using what they learned from light years away and applying it to Earth.

A final Starfield theory would possibly have something in the middle. With technological advances now met, the Constellation can communicate with a team on Earth to coordinate how to get the resources from Alpha Centauri to home. Unlikely for sure but if Bethesda wanted to get Earth more involved in Starfield’s lore, this would be one way to do it.
