Cult of the Lamb is set to receive an update titled Sins of the Flesh, which will roll out sometime in early 2024. The developers addressed rumors of the title adding NSFW elements about intercourse in the Indie management sim.
The idea’s inception started as a planned milestone when the developer team Massive Monster announced that the mentioned update would be added once its Twitter account reached 300 thousand followers. As expected, the team behind the title kept its promise as more than 113 thousand people followed Massive Monster on Twitter. This followed an official announcement from Massive Monster.
The team talked to Polygon, sharing details about Cult of the Lamb’s upcoming Sins of the Flesh update. Here is what was revealed and what fans of the title can be excited about.
What Do We Know About Cult of the Lamb’s Sins of the Flesh Update?
At first glance, the game is a good mix of satire, roguelike levels, and building. The game is already centered around building and sustaining a demonic cult. So, by all means, it was natural that the game’s themes raised some eyebrows. In addition, when a topic rarely touched upon this blatantly in video games gets an update centered around such a topic, some speculation about it is to be expected.
The announcement made by the dev team led many fans and critics to wonder how the update would execute the idea. This is even more intriguing because the game’s sound and visual design, though charming, doesn’t look like it will accommodate raunchy ideas and its execution.
That is because Cult of the Lamb is a game for teens, and the game’s visuals are much more reminiscent of a cartoon show. As shared by Polygon, the devs revealed that the update will not influence the game’s ESRB rating. It will remain for teens, so the game’s existing audience will remain the same. In the statement confirming the same, the Developer team said:
We used games like Pokémon and The Sims when it comes to references, but put our own cult-ish spin on things. The age rating will not change…
While it may seem like the update was a last-minute thought, as suggested by the Dev Team, adding it to the game only if its followers reached a specific number.
This was not the case; the update was well thought out, planned, and executed. Speaking about this, Massive Monster said:
We have been working on Sins of the Flesh since we finished the last update earlier this year…When it comes to follower fornication it was something we workshopped a long time ago and didn’t go with,
The studio continued and shared that things were going according to the plan that was laid down:
…but now our programmers are working on the update as we speak. Our team is very talented and we have no doubt that it will be ready for release. We always finish on time.
This was all that the studio had to say on the update. Despite the studio not sharing any real news on what the update will offer, we now know the developer team’s thought process regarding it. But it also begs another question: will Sins of the Flesh make Cult of the Lamb problematic? Answering this is almost impossible due to the lack of details available at the moment.
We know that Cult of the Lamb has cute little animals as characters. Including raunchy elements could be a recipe for disaster if not executed with thought.
The topic that the developers have chosen to base an update on is one of the many elements part of the spectrum that the game tries to criticize. So, while not being totally poles apart and uncalled for, one does worry about how the update will influence the game’s critical perception.
It can rain on the game’s parade despite Cult of the Lamb being an Indie darling; regardless, we know that the dev team knows how to package seemingly problematic elements and sensor them so they do not appear jarring. So, if past actions are an indicator, they can be trusted with themes generally considered unnerving.
