According to a theory by player Fine_Childhood718 on Reddit, a mission that involves Dark Fluid in the game has subtly hinted at a larger turn of events than what players may be expecting. Usually, mission objectives require helldivers to kill hordes of enemies and collect resources, or something between those lines. But this time, the mission was a little different.
Instead of simply liberating the planet by killing enemies, the game is seemingly tracking how players are helping the regen rate reduce. This entails a complete halt for enemies to eventually spawn, and the planet ceasing to exist altogether.

If this mechanic is indeed true, it leads to newer forms of questlines players haven’t experienced before. Ideally, Helldivers 2 could benefit from new ways of playing the game, and reducing the regen rate for enemies could eventually mean permanently stopping a threat from harming a planet.
This could also mean that we’re getting closer to witnessing new enemy types that could hinder the growth of Super Citizen. How exactly will Arrowhead execute these ideas? Only time will tell.

If this theory holds any truth, it could be a massive indication of how questlines could work in the future. Given the live-service and co-op nature of Helldivers 2, a big part of the experience is tracking the overall progress players make in the fight for Super Earth.
Going forward, liberating a planet may not indicate a permanent mark of progress, but reducing the overall regen rate could be a way of indicating the endgame scenario for a particular planet in Helldivers 2’s galaxy.
This could give Arrowhead ideas for larger/deadlier weapons and a way of making sure that a mission makes a permanent impact on the planet, rather than something that feels like a roguelike mechanic. This could also be in the form of a seasonal event that leads to a new chapter in the game.
