But apart from getting a peek at the new suit, which sees the return of the iconic trunks, the new reveals from the set also confirm the inclusion of The Winter Soldier star Frank Grillo. While Grillo is set to voice Rick Flag Sr. in the first DCU release, following these new leaks, it’s clear he’ll make his live-action DCU debut in Superman.

Frank Grillo doesn’t seem to be a big fan of superheroes in blue. Known for taking on Captain America on the elevator in The Winter Soldier, the actor can be seen arresting David Corenswet‘s Superman from the new on-set footage. While Grillo is also set to appear in Peacemaker season 2, considering that Gunn’s priority currently involves Superman, it’s safe to assume the 2025 film will mark his live-action DCU debut.

But prior to making his live-action appearance, the Boss Level star will kickstart the new universe with Creature Commandos, which will mark the official beginning of this new chapter later this year. In addition to him, another figure, who is dressed in complete black, can be seen accompanying Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. in Superman’s arrest.

Although guesses about the character have been ranging from Ultraman to Ulysses and anything in between, we’ll have to wait until something official comes from Gunn to know it for certain.

Following the actor’s previous statements regarding his future in the DCU, Frank Grillo‘s inclusion in numerous DC projects comes as no surprise. Grillo, who has been pretty vocal about his excitement to join the new chapter of DC, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, previously confirmed that they have “got some amazing stuff planned in the next year or two”.

He said (via Screen Rant):

But, you know, James Gunn and Peter Safran over at DC have given me a great opportunity with Creature Commandos — and some other things that I’m not allowed to talk about — and I’m looking forward to the future with these guys in the DCU across the board. I think they’ve got some amazing stuff planned in the next year or two.

With The Purge star now already confirmed to appear in two major projects outside of Creature Commandos, it’s safe to assume his role in the DCU will be more crucial than one might’ve assumed.

Superman will hit theatres on 11 July 2025.
