The Day Before, the over-promised and under-delivered title from developer Fntastic, failed miserably within just hours of releasing in Steam early access as players started asking for refunds and accusing the developers of promising an open-world MMO game but instead an extraction shooter.
Fntastic shocked everyone more when it released a statement announcing the shutdown as The Day Before failed financially. Now, Bohemia Interactive, the developer behind DayZ, a multiplayer survival title, has trolled Fntastic, which was followed by another team of developers humiliating it.
DayZ and Rust Developers Troll The Day Before Studio Upon Shutdown
The Day Before was one of Steam’s most hyped and wishlisted games after the developers released an announcement trailer in 2021. The game saw so many delays and issues that gamers started to think it was a scam, which the game somehow feels like now. The Day Before was released in Steam early access on December 7, and players couldn’t spend even a few hours playing the game and started asking for refunds.
Over 38,000 players were playing the game on release day, and soon the player count drastically dropped as only 650 players were playing it at the time of writing. The game soon made it to Steam’s worst-reviewed games of all time list, and even after that, nobody could have seen what was coming. Fntastic took to X/Twitter and announced that the studio is shutting down due to the financial failure of The Day Before and that it lacks the funds to continue.
It was soon after that the developers behind DayZ and Rust trolled Fntastic on their respective X/Twitter handles. Bohemia Interactive, the developer behind DayZ, trolled Fntastic with the same format of its statement to announce and celebrate the game’s milestone moment, its 10th anniversary. The funny part is that the anniversary is still 4 days away and is on December 16th.
Bohemia Interactive trolled Fntastic by copying its timeline of the studio’s inception and the game’s development cycle and showing DayZ‘s development and release schedule. It also stated how it included Melee and Vaulting when the game was released in early access and launched 1.0, respectively.
The developers of the multiplayer survival title Rust also joined in to make fun of Fntastic and released a statement on X/Twitter. The developers took the trolling to the next level, and instead of writing the statement in the same format as Fntastic, they used a red marker to replace the words in the statement by Bohemia Interactive wherever applicable.
Fntastic announced the studio’s closure by stating that all the finances are used to pay off debts, and it used all the resources to develop the game and has nothing to continue the game. It said that it had plans to release new patches to show the game’s “full potential” but could not continue due to a lack of funding. It added that it took no money from the public, had no pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns, and worked tirelessly for five years.
It further mentioned that “the future of The Day Before and Propnight is unknown,” but it also mentioned that the servers will remain operational. Fntastic apologized to players for not meeting their expectations and added that it calculated its capabilities.
This statement from the studio enraged people, as they had always suspected something like this from Fntastic, as it kept delaying the game multiple times and was accused of stealing the name, font, gameplay, and much more from other games.
Fntastic and Mytona, the publisher of The Day Before, also released statements later saying that they are working with Steam and that any player who requests a refund will get it regardless of the game time. Fnatstic also added that it has received zero dollars from the game sales and will receive nothing.
