Deadpool & Wolverine broke the internet with its first teaser, ushering in a new era of hype in the MCU, one that has not been seen since Avengers: Endgame. The first feature-length mutant project in the MCU, the film has a lot riding on it and also has a lot of speculation about what it is going to be.
One of the main attractions of the film is that it will introduce mutants in a major capacity in the MCU. While X-Men heavy hitters Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff made their appearances way back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they were referred to as ‘enhanced’ and not mutants. A new theory has emerged that Wade, through his shenanigans will retcon the origins of the Maximoff twins and make them full-fledged mutants in the MCU as well.
Deadpool seems to be in Avengers: Age of Ultron from the trailer
A shot from the trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine shows Wade Wilson being in front of a screen, that is clearly depicting a scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron. A few moments later, the character is seen in a snowy terrain, a somewhat similar location to where we see the HYDRA base in the opening minutes of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
This scene in the film is where we also meet Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s Pietro and Elizabeth Olsen‘s Wanda Maximoff for the first time in the film. The theory, that has been making the rounds on Reddit, suggests that Deadpool will somehow interfere in the sequence, reinstating Wanda and Pietro’s status as mutants in the MCU.
Given that the duo made their appearance in the films when Fox was not under Disney, the House of Mouse couldn’t refer to these characters as mutants. But now, given how fully integrated the X-Men are going to be in the MCU with Deadpool & Wolverine, ‘mutant’ is a word that can be thrown around in the MCU without any corporate consequence.
Deadpool & Wolverine could make a world of difference in the MCU
While Wade hops around universes and the timeline to fix the wrongs of the MCU (or so one theory states as the plot of the film), there are a lot of “What If” scenarios that could become canon if the Merc with a Mouth decides to fix them. While he might take his role as Marvel Jesus a little too seriously, it could lead him to correct mistakes all over the MCU, such as preventing character deaths and inserting the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in the MCU, among other things.
Given that we see Deadpool also watch clips of Captain America; Winter Soldier, it is possible that Deadpool would embark on a mission to correct mistakes, like exposing Hydra before the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier, or even taking on the Winter Soldier himself.
Other things that Deadpool could focus on ‘fixing’ could be the properties and plot points that did not sit right with the audience. For example, Deadpool could make it so that Iron Man 3 actually involved the real Mandarin or that the event of Captain America: Civil War never happened, hence allowing a united Avengers team to fight Thanos’ invasion in Infinity War.
