Death Stranding 2 is one of the most anticipated games because of all the mystery that has been surrounding it, with Hideo Kojima mostly keeping things under wraps and just giving small hints to what fans might expect from the sequel. It received its first trailer during the 2022 edition of The Game Awards, but since then, not many updates have followed.

There were also numerous leaks regarding the inclusion of the second Death Stranding installment at Sony’s first State of Play of 2024, and fortunately, they turned out to be true as viewers got to witness its initial gameplay footage and an extensive trailer.

The extensive State of Play trailer for Death Stranding 2 is just as weird as one might expect.

It was already being speculated days before Sony’s State of Play took place that Death Stranding 2 may make an appearance, and PlayStation held nothing back with a detailed 9-minute look at Hideo Kojima’s upcoming sequel. The trailer brings back Sam, played by Norman Reedus, as he heads off to another adventure for the sake of “human connection beyond the UCA.”

He is accompanied by allies, such as Lea Seydoux’s character, with the mission of saving “humanity from extinction.”

The Death Stranding 2 trailer is just as weird as one might expect, when it basically starts with Seydoux cutting open a body with George Miller, although it has some nice classical music playing at the back. Considering how all of the shown footage is captured directly from the PlayStation 5, one thing is for sure: the game will look stunning.

Even if one of the title cards in the footage didn’t mention that it was a Hideo Kojima game, one can easily tell the moment a spaceship spouts out of an infant’s mouth.

The Death Stranding 2 trailer also has numerous on-screen text slides with the words “ON THE,” each followed by a different general area such as “SHIP” or “DRAWBRIDGE,” showing the potential different locations that players will get to explore in the highly anticipated sequel. The aforementioned ship has an armory of its own where Sam can check his weapons and decide which ones to use on specific missions.

Seydoux’s character also mentions “other members of the crew,” meaning that fans will get to meet a wide array of unique characters on their expedition.

Death Stranding 2 Has an Official Subtitle: On The Beach

Hideo Kojima has decided to call his upcoming sequel Death Stranding 2 On The Beach.
Hideo Kojima has decided to call his upcoming sequel Death Stranding 2 On The Beach.

The base ship in Death Stranding 2 does not belong to the UCA but to an extremely rich civilian who has the means to get access to a lot of technology. Sam is obviously a little concerned about the “generous patron” who is blessing the crew with all of these things, but even Seydoux’s character has never met the mysterious individual.

After the ship comes the “STRAND,” which introduces fans to quite possibly the weirdest character in the upcoming sequel: a talking puppet who will hang by Sam’s side throughout his journey.

Even Kojima himself probably knows how crazy the inclusion of the puppet is, as Seydoux wants Sam to “humor him,” but apparently, he has the necessary “knowledge and experience” needed for the journey in Death Stranding 2 On The Beach. It is actually reminiscent of God of War, as Kratos also has Mimir dangling on his back during his adventures, which the puppet does not seem to like.

Players will also be taken to the “BORDER,” as the UCA tries to expand its network to countries like Mexico.

Seydoux states that “the Death Stranding is far from over” and “humanity is still in danger,” as it is up to Sam to save the world from extinction by making his way through visually gorgeous landscapes. Death Stranding 2 On the Beach will be released in 2025.
