Something that the British monarchy didn’t witness during the time of Queen Elizabeth II, is being done by Denmark’s royal family. According to reports, Queen Margrethe is stepping down from her position in favor of her elder son, who is set to be the new King Frederik.
Meanwhile, although this abdication gave birth to a dramatic month in Denmark, The Guardian reported that the former Danish queen is now set to have her life story brought to screen, in a TV show Af Guds nåde. Just like the British monarchy did with The Crown, Denmark’s royal family is currently waiting for the same.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Announced Her Abdication
Denmark witnessed a dramatic month by the beginning of 2024, as Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication, after ruling for 52 years on January 14. Ascending the throne following the death of her father, King Frederik IX, the crown ruled for years until she suffered health issues that led her to step down for her eldest son Frederik X.
Becoming the first Danish monarch to step down in nearly 900 years, Queen Margrethe II conducted the formal signing of the abdication on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. Her decision to step down automatically made 55-year-old Frederik the new monarch of Denmark.
According to Reuters, the former Queen cited health issues as the reason for her decision. Previously undergoing successful back surgery in February 2023, Queen Margrethe II seemed perfectly fine. However, her surgery made her wonder if it was time to “leave the responsibility to the next generation”. Therefore, the Crown decided to step down for her 55-year-old son to ascend the throne.
Former Queen Margrethe Awaits The Crown Style TV Series
Queen Margrethe II’s abdication is something that neither Denmark witnessed in a long time, nor did the renowned British monarchy perform during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The British Crown served the kingdom until the tragic demise of the Queen leading to her eldest son, Charles III, succeeding the position.

Although Denmark did something that Britain didn’t, Queen Margrethe II is now awaiting a similar The Crown style TV series narrating her life story. According to The Guardian reports, the former Queen of Denmark is waiting to have her life story brought to screen, in a TV show Af Guds nåde. Developed by the makers of the hit Danish drama Borgen, the show will tell Queen Margrethe II’s story beginning with her birth in 1940.
Set at Amalienborg royal palace in the capital city of Copenhagen, Af Guds nåde (By the grace of God) will follow the very pattern used in The Crown. Showcasing events from the perspective of the royal family members and royal court employees, the series is expected to be released next year.
