With the release of Mad Max 2 (1981), aka The Road Warrior (1982) in the U.S., Mel Gibson rose to international stardom. He established himself as a leading box office draw through films like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and the action-packed Lethal Weapon series.

Mel Gibson faced tough times as an aspiring actor in the late 1970s. He had limited stage experience and a few appearances on Australian TV, but his fortunes changed when director George Miller chose him as the lead in the 1979 film Mad Max.

Gibson only received just $10,000 for his role, despite this film’s release gave Gibson global fame, and his Oscar-winning career was born.

1. The Year of Living Dangerously (1983)

The film stars Mel Gibson as Australian journalist Guy Hamilton, and Sigourney Weaver as British Embassy officer Jill Bryant. Linda Hunt won Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

2. The River (1984)

In a film featuring Mel Gibson as Tom Garvey, a farming family struggles against brutal storms, bank threaten them to seize their farm, and they face various hardships to preserve and retain ownership of their farm. The film won Oscar for Special Achievement Award (Kay Rose, for Sound Effects Editing).

3. Braveheart (1995)

Gibson portrays Sir William Wallace, a Scottish warrior who led the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. The movie won Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director (Mel Gibson), Best Cinematography (John Toll), Best Effects – Sound Effects Editing, Best Makeup.

4. Pocahontas (1995)

Mel Gibson voiced the character John Smith, the love interest of Pocahontas in the movie. It won Best Original Song (Colors of the Wind by Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz), Best Original Score, Musical or Comedy (Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz).

5. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 biographical war film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, starring Andrew Garfield. The movie won Oscar for Best Film Editing (John Gilbert), Best Sound Mixing.
