Clooney has publicly expressed his regret for participating in the project, going so far as to refund people who paid to see the film despite its massive profit of $113 million.
Batman and Robin: A Tragic Failure
The generally negative reception of Batman and Robin overshadowed George Clooney’s performance in the iconic role. In addition to the infamous bat n*pples and the inclusion of over-the-top villains like Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, the film is generally considered a campy, over-the-top mess.

Since then, Clooney has called the film a waste of money and expressed remorse for agreeing to star in it. During an interview on The Graham Norton Show, Clooney apologized “for Batman and Robin.”
“I always apologize for Batman & Robin. Let me just say that I’d actually thought I’d destroyed the franchise until somebody else brought it back years later and changed it. I thought at the time that this was going to be a very good career move. Ummmmm, it wasn’t.”
Despite negative reviews, the film’s extensive advertising campaign helped it gross over $113 million. Despite the film’s commercial success, it was detrimental to Clooney’s career. Most notably, the series was restarted from scratch, which led to Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Dark Knight films.
In addition, the film’s campy style has been debated for years, with many viewers wondering if the filmmakers meant for the film to be so ridiculous. Interestingly, some fans have recently returned to Batman & Robin, enjoying its cheesy humor and exaggerated visuals.
The World Without Batman and Robin
George Clooney went on to star in several more films after Batman and Robin, such as The Perfect Storm, Ocean’s Eleven, and Gravity. In addition to his film career, he became well-known on television after starring in the long-running series ER.

Outside of being one of the greatest movie stars in Hollywood, the actor established the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2019 to advocate for and advance global social justice and human rights.
Clooney’s latest film, Ticket to Paradise, where he co-stars with Julia Roberts, was released last year with average reviews. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Although playing Batman may not have been his forte, one thing’s certain, his good looks and charming ways continue to captivate the audience and his die-hard fans around the globe.
