“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” brings back the Titans on the big screen. The two Kaijus are gearing up to stomp, swing, and wrestle their way into theaters later this month. This epic monster mash serves as the latest entry in the MonsterVerse, a cinematic universe that unleashes the biggest of the beasts.
With whispers of a new threat and the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, Godzilla and Kong put aside their differences in the latest movie. However, despite the excitement surrounding the film’s release, some early reviews haven’t been entirely positive. Will this dampen the movie’s financial success? Early reports suggest not.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Estimated To Make $45 to $50 Million In Its Opening Domestic Weekend
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire recently had a pre-release screening. Its critical response was mostly lukewarm with almost every critic calling it “an average Monsterverse flick.” Per the early reviews, the movie pales in comparison to 2023’s Godzilla: Minus One, the $10-Million-Budget movie made in Japan.
Despite the lack of critical praise, the box office outlook appears promising. As per reports from BoxOfficePro and Deadline, Godzilla x Kong is estimated to open in the range of $45 to $50 Million on its opening domestic weekend.
Further, as per BoxOfficePro, the movie will make about $91 Million to $140 Million during its overall domestic run. Depending on how well it is received by fans, the movie can have a significant box office run worldwide. To put things in context, at the time of writing, only Dune: Part Two had made more than $500 Million in 2024. Though difficult, the new MonsterVerse movie will definitely try to breach that threshold.
How Much Did The Previous MonsterVerse Movie Make?
The Mighty Ape and the Atomic Lizard have been carrying the MonsterVerse for the last ten years. While the new movie’s estimate of a $50 Million opening sounds impressive, it dwarfs in comparison to the numbers of 2014’s Godzilla ($93 Million) and Kong: Skull Island ($61 Million).
Speaking of their worldwide lifetime grosses, Kong: Skull Island currently reigns supreme with a figure of $568 Million followed by Godzilla with $529 Million. Godzilla: King of the Monsters made $387 Million while Godzilla vs. Kong bounced back with a sum of $470 Million, as per BoxOfficeMojo.
Only time will tell if The New Empire can dethrone these kaiju champions. The film will unleash its monstrous spectacle on audiences worldwide on March 27th, 2024, and hit theaters in the United States two days later on March 29th.
