Godzilla and King Kong are ready to share the screen yet again in another project, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is a direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). The movie will follow the gigantic monsters who will join hands to face off a formidable enemy, but will it manage to match the achievements of Godzilla Minus One?
Well, recent critical reviews circulating on the Internet might squash fans’ expectations regarding the upcoming project.
Critical Reviews Claimed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Inferior to Godzilla Minus One
An X user, Gameboy287, revealed the critical response to MonsterVerse’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire at a pre-release screening. However, they were not impressed with the project. According to the user, he spoke to 4 critics who all called it “an average Monsterverse flick.”
What was more surprising was the fact that they all compared the new Monsterverse movie with 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, suggesting that it lacked compared to its previous installment.
This is quite a concern for Monsterverse fans, especially, when the 2023 movie ended up breaking several records, as it got hailed as the greatest in the Godzilla franchise. Fans took to X to express their opinions on the latest information, as Minus One is expected to be the subject in almost every review.

Minus One is gonna be the worst thing ever for this movies critical reception 😭 expect every review to bring up minus one in some way https://t.co/Lxt9HqeMKT

It's pretty much the consequences of having these two movies come out that close to each other.

I feel like some more time between the films would have helped some with this. (And been a better move overall)

if you are comparing godzilla and kong to minus one then it is no different than king kong vs. godzilla to g54. both have different styles and the most important thing is does godzilla's role have relevance and how well is the action handled.

Some users noted that the new movie is quite at a disadvantage because it was released shortly after another film in the series. However, others felt that comparing the two movies was unnecessary since they were entirely different from each other. While there’s still time for the reviews to drop in officially, early box-office projection for the movie is already out!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Eyes $45M on Its Opening Weekend
As the fans hype up for the release of the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, Deadline recently released the current projections which are quite on the low side. It is expected to gross $45 million on its opening weekend, thus pushing the Monsterverse franchise beyond the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office.
The early predictions are much more than Godzilla vs. Kong ($31 million day-and-date release on the Max streaming service), suggesting that it could bring good results at the international box office. If the movie establishes itself as a success in the Monsterverse franchise, the Titans could reunite for another project.
Film director Adam Wingard has expressed his interest in another Godzilla/Kong crossover as he shared in an interview with DiscussingFilm,
“I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] does and how things kind of shape out.”
He continued,
“I know that sounds like a bullsh-t diplomatic answer (laughs). But the truth is, If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I do have more story to tell with these monsters and I know where I’d go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back on for another one if things worked out!”
As the two Titans gear up to join forces against a new threat, the movie will delve into the origins of the Titans and Skull Island. It stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit the big screens on March 29, 2024.
