The Leap Year actress shared about feeling disappointed and directionless in her career once. She also revealed her breakthrough role which confirmed her decision to be an actress.
Amy Adams was unhappy as an actor before her breakthrough role
The talented star Amy Adams wanted to be an actress from a very young age and to hone her skills, she did musical theatre. She soon moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of being an actress. Adams shared in an interview with MovieMaker,
“I worked on a film, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and I had a really good time. It coincided with a pulled muscle, and I was tired from eight shows a week. So I thought, ‘Well, maybe I’ll go to L.A. for a little while and see how it goes.’”
After some struggle in the initial days, the actress got a chance to star in Catch Me If You Can alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. However, she did not feel her career was growing as she had thought, which made her feel disappointed. Adams started reassessing her career options. Her view changed when she was cast in her breakthrough role in Junebug. She shared,
“For me, as an actress, my personal breakthrough was Junebug. It was the year when I learned that I wasn’t willing to be unhappy to be an actress. I was turning 30 that year, and I was thinking, ‘What do I want? This is my life.’”
Junebug is a comedy-drama film released in 2005 and directed by Phil Morrison. Amy Adams received an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in the film.
Amy Adams’ role in Sunshine Cleaning made her second-guess life choices
Adams starred in a dark comedy film Sunshine Cleaning in 2008. It was directed by Christine Jeffs, and she co-starred in the movie with Emily Blunt. They played the role of two underachieving sisters who worked cleaning up crime scenes for a living.
Adams shared in an interview with Newsweek that it was one of her first darker roles which took an emotional toll on her. She was deeply affected and started reflecting on her career path. Talking about her time on the set, she said,
“I was thinking about one of the days when the camera stopped rolling and I just could not stop crying. It was a point at which the character was being honest about herself and what she was and wasn’t. It really struck a chord. Am I doing it right?”
However, she became doubtful of her career choice as she felt unfulfilled in other areas of her life. Adams said,
“I don’t think all success and failure is judged by a career. I’m not married. I don’t have children. Sometimes I wish I read more books than scripts. Did I choose the right road?”
The film was received well at the box-office, grossing $17.3 million against a $5 million budget.
