The 60-year-old actor, Tom Cruise was featured in 2013’s Oblivion which was produced and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film is based on Kosinski’s unpublished graphic novel of the same name giving homage to the 1970 sci-fi genre. Back in 2010, it was announced that Disney had acquired the rights to the film’s script in a heated auction.

However, the plan changed after a while as Disney dropped the project as it was uncomfortable with making a PG-13 film. The studio was not convinced by the $150 million price tag for the script which required a lot of story changes. The script was originally written by William Monahan but the final screenplay that ran in the theatres was from Karl Gajdusek and Michael deBruyn.

While Kosinski’s relationship with the studio was good, they allowed him to shop at other studios. It was reported at the time that Warners, Fox, Universal, and Paramount were among the companies who were considering the project. It eventually went to Universal Pictures which gave them an immense profit of $157 Million as the film grossed $286 million worldwide.

His career has dealt with highs and lows as well with Oblivion being a film that can be put in the middle of his successful and failed projects. While the film initially gained much acclaim, it was unable to sustain fans’ attention for a long time becoming one of his most underrated films ever.

His portrayal in the movie not only showed the action-star persona of Cruise but also delved deep into the heartbroken character it was known in the film, which made this film quite a great flick. Regarding the plans for its sequel, it is highly likely a big no as the project was unable to become a classic.
