Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was quite a polarising film. It brought in iconic characters from Marvel Comics, and had one of the most highly anticipated fights in the MCU; Doctor Strange vs. Scarlet Witch.
Despite this, there were also many things that it did not get right. The unfortunate CGI, poor character development, and questionable pacing of the film made fans especially critical of it when giving their thoughts.
It would seem that another shortcoming can be added to the list of all the things Benedict Cumberbatch’s film got wrong. A found recently pointed out a gaping plot hole in the film’s story and it all has to do with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
America Chavez Does Not Know Who Spider-Man Is
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, during one of the first meetings that America Chavez has with Wong and Doctor Strange, the topic of Spider-Man is brought up. Xochitl Gomez’s character asks the two sorcerers if they have any experience with the multiverse, trying to understand how much she has to explain to them.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s character mentions that he and Wong know plenty about the multiverse after their experiences with Spider-Man, referring to the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It is here that Chavez becomes extremely confused, asking who Spider-Man is. When she is told about the wedding-swinging superhero, she gets a look of confusion and disgust on her face. Having never heard about the superhero, she asks questions about his appearance and his powers.
Did Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Create A Big Plot Hole?
The scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness rubbed many Marvel fans the wrong way. Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and important characters, both inside and outside the MCU. He has many different versions, that are in contact with each other. So much so, that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse even introduced a society solely dedicated to the superhero.
One thing about Multiverse of Madness that didn't make sense to me: If America Chavez has been to God knows how many worlds, knows who Doctor Strange is, and clearly seen other heroes, how is it possible she doesn't know who Spider-Man is?!

This is why fans were extremely confused when America Chavez told Strange that she had never heard of the superhero. MyTimeToShineHello on X pointed out that having traveled to so many different universes and seen so many different Earths, how has she never come across, even one version of the character?
