Kate Winslet Discusses Her Character From Mare of Easttown

Joining HBO’s limited series Mare of Easttown, Kate Winslet dedicated herself to her character, Mare Sheehan. Playing the role of a small-town Pennsylvania detective engaged in solving a murder while dealing with the aftermath of her son’s suicide, Winslet tried delivering the role with sheer genuineness.

After preparing herself to be unglamorous for the role, and working on the project for a long time, Kate Winslet got emotional while discussing the end of her series. Being emotionally invested in her character, Winslet mentioned being totally in love with Mare Sheehan. 

I’m in love with this wildly flawed, messy, broken, fragmented, difficult woman. I loved her marks and her scars and her faults and her flaws and the fact that she has no off switch, no stop button. She just knows ‘Go.’” the actress discussed her character.

Speaking about her dedication to the show, Kate Winslet mentioned, “Not only did I have to hide myself in the character completely, but I had to hide this story, carry the secret”. She further added, “I kept it hidden since 2018 when I first read the scripts.” Thus, getting totally invested in the role, Winslet even mentioned engaging in disagreements and squabbles with the director of the show.

Kate Winslet Fought For The Authenticity Of Her Character

Appearing in the murder mystery as the lead character Mare Sheehan, who hides under a heartbreaking facade, Kate Winslet wanted to bring out the vulnerability of her character. Stating how Mare is “entrenched in grief for her son” but never shares it with anyone, as she feels it might make her “vulnerable”, Winslet mentioned having a hard time processing the role.

Nonetheless, Winslet tried to do justice to her character and even fought for its authenticity in the jaw-dropping show. Embracing the unfiltered and unglamorous look of her character, the actress mentioned feeling a sense of reality and empowerment. Further, getting overly attached to her role, Kate Winslet mentioned engaging in a disagreement with director Craig Zobel, when he offered to cut “a bulgy bit of belly” from her intimate scene with Guy Pearce

Further discussing how she delivered her character with genuineness, Winslet spoke in detail about the process. Wearing inexpensive T-shirts, leaving crumpled clothes, and adding sloppiness and looseness to her posture, Kate Winslet eventually delivered a raw character.
