James Gunn is now DC’s co-CEO and he’s busy charting the way forward for Marvel’s rival superhero franchise. His Marvel commitments will end soon but he has ensured that he gets into the MCU Hall of Fame in a unique way with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Even now, the MCU is considered to be a kid’s franchise because of how squeaky clean it is. There is no gory violence, no explicit s*xual situations, nor any F-bombs thrown around. Gunn is about to solve one such issue of the MCU, but Kevin Feige warned him that he should tread carefully.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is gearing up for release and among all the clips and trailers released, one is particularly drawing attention. It’s a scene where Chris Pratt’s Star Lord utters MCU’s first F-bomb. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pratt explained how many had tried to get that distinction but failed.

The talk show host brought up the scene during the interview, and Pratt looked very proud to have this ‘trophy’ in his bag.

Chris Pratt: “I think everybody’s tried, you know? With a PG-13 movie, you typically get two SH-words, and usually don’t get – maybe you can get one F-word. So everyone’s always lobbying, you know? Throwing out an improv to get it in there.”

Jimmy Kimmel: “Is that right?”

Chris Pratt: “Yeah, yeah, for years. It’s not the first one I’ve tried to get into the movie. But yeah, they edited it together and it was a funny beat, and so they kept it.”

Jimmy Kimmel: “Were you super excited when that happened?”

Chris Pratt: “Yes! Yeah, I’m pretty excited about it.”

The two also chatted about how Samuel L. Jackson, who is known for his infamous F-bombs, didn’t get to be the first one to do so for the MCU. Pratt also said that it was difficult to get that F-word pass from Marvel. He revealed that Kevin Feige himself warned James Gunn about what he was doing.

During the interview, Chris Pratt explained that Marvel boss Kevin Feige warned James Gunn about gaining the title of the first person to use an F-word in an MCU movie. But Gunn was undeterred. Here’s how the conversation went:

Jimmy Kimmel: “Did they huddle and go ‘Wow, we’re kinda getting into different territory here?'”

Chris Pratt: “Yeah, apparently, from my understanding, the story goes that Kevin Feige talked to James Gunn and said ‘Listen, you don’t want to be the guy who’s known for having the first F-word in your movie.’ And James is like, ‘Yes, I do!’ Don’t you know me?! That’s exactly what I want!’ And so, they kept it in.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 becoming the first Marvel film to have added an F-bomb has certainly added to its novelty. Whether that makes people watch Gunn’s last Marvel film in theaters remains to be seen.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases on 5 May 2023.
