In the expansive Wizarding World, fans often delve into every conceivable aspect of J.K. Blending elements of the magical world with speculative fiction, fans tend to stretch the limits of what’s considered canonical.

While some of these theories end up being delightfully bizarre, a few hold a certain weight due to strong evidence from the texts. One such theory posits that Draco Malfoy might be a werewolf. Combining his family’s association with dark magic and the way Lord Voldemort punished him by ordering Fenrir Greyback to bite him, fans are convinced that J.K. Rowling might have actually considered making it canon.

Evidence Suggesting that Draco Malfoy Became a Werewolf in Harry Potter

For generations, J.K. Rowling‘s iconic Harry Potter franchise has sparked interesting fan theories and debates surrounding the Wizarding World. Although not all of them were worthy of people’s attention, one particular fan theory cyclically gained the spotlight after Potterheads suggested that the Slytherin snob Draco Malfoy might have turned into a werewolf in the latter half of the series.

With evidence stemming from J.K. Rowling’s book series and the movie adaptations, fans on Reddit claimed that Harry’s nemesis had indeed become a werewolf after he was bit by Fenrir Greyback. Considering how Draco was one of the primary antagonists and had dangerous allegiance to Lord Voldemort, fans highlighted evidence suggesting his werewolf side.

Given how Draco’s father Lucius Malfoy was sent to Azkaban, which led Draco to take over his place as a Death Eater and accept orders from Voldemort, fans argued that Draco was never a Death Eater but instead, a werewolf. Suggesting that Draco must have transformed between the events of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince, fans argued how this explained his noticeable change of behavior.

Although it was meant to show his struggles with being a Death Eater, fans believe that this change was actually Draco becoming a werewolf. Backing up the theory, fans pointed at Remus Lupin’s statement, where he revealed how Voldemort had a history of ordering Fenrir Greyback, a werewolf, to bite the children of his enemies. Therefore, when J.K. Rowling mentioned that Lucius was punished for failing to obtain the prophecy, perhaps she hinted at this theory.

Despite J.K. Rowling’s Debunking the Theory, Fans are Convinced this is a Canon

Considering how convincing this theory sounds, after being backed up by evidence from the text, fans unanimously agreed that Draco Malfoy’s sick and pale appearance wasn’t a result of his unwanted Death Eater responsibilities, but of him becoming a werewolf. In fact, Potterheads got so engulfed by the theory that they even began believing that J.K. Rowling had perhaps planned on turning this canon.

But despite evidence backing the werewolf theory made it compelling, J.K. Rowling debunked the idea via X. Stating that “Draco definitely isn’t a werewolf”, the author confirmed that she never planned on making it an official storyline. However, despite Rowling’s post, it didn’t convince every Harry Potter fan, for a few were still skeptical of her statement considering how the author had a history of changing Harry Potter canon.

Therefore, fans still seem to believe that J.K. Rowling had actually planned to make this werewolf theory a canon. But in the end, irrespective of the truths and lies, the theory indicating that Draco Malfoy was a werewolf is certainly interesting. Moreover, it’s amusing to think what could have been if the franchise had gone deeper down that path.
