When Drake showed his support for Sean Strickland and made a bet of $700,000 in the fight against Dricus du Plessis, fans began to assume that the Drake Curse was going to kick in. They started believing that du Plessis had a greater chance of winning the coveted Middleweight Champion title at UFC 297. Surely enough, the infamous curse made its way into the fight.

du Plessis maintained his groove throughout the fight and took on the early jabs from Strickland like a pro. The South African fighter managed to emerge victorious after a five-round fight and a score of 47-48, 48-47, and 48-47 (via Yahoo Sports). du Plessis’ victory is historic as he is the first South African fighter to become a UFC champion. Drake released his eighth studio album last year titled For All the Dogs. His close friend GORDO who collaborated with Drake on his previous album Honestly, Nevermind, returned for the eighth album and received producing credits on the songs Gently and Rich Baby Daddy. The former rapper talked about what he and Drake wanted to accomplish with the new album.

Speaking to Complex, GORDO revealed that Drake wanted something different for the album, and the two worked for weeks brainstorming ideas. He also claimed that Drake was a madman and constantly worked for weeks without sleeping. He said,

“He told me that he needed something different. Weeks and weeks and weeks… we sat there for a long time trying to figure out what I [could] bring to the table. He’s a mad man. He’s insane. He doesn’t sleep. He just works, works, works, works. He’ll call me at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. in the morning. I’m like, bro, “go to bed. You’re insane.” So that’s what I learned.”

The album received mixed reviews when it was released and fell short of Drake’s previous superior works. He also released a poetry book titled Titles Ruin Everything last July
