The re-release of Dune: Part 1 is making waves at the box office, pulling in a hefty $30 million worldwide. That’s more than half of what Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web managed, showing a big gap in how they’re doing. Dune: Part 1 is still drawing crowds everywhere, while Madame Web is getting labeled as one of the worst movies lately.
This big difference in their box office numbers really shows how much people love Dune and how tough it can be for spin-offs like Madame Web to make it in the movie world.
Dune Re-Release Elevates Global Box Office Success
The re-release of Dune is making a splash at the global box office, reaching new heights in just a week. People all over are heading to theaters to catch this film, and it’s doing even better than expected, officially becoming a blockbuster hit.
Warner Bros. made a savvy move to drum up excitement before Dune: Part Two hits theaters later this month. By bringing back the first film, they’ve not only surpassed Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web at the box office but also given folks who missed it before another shot to see it on the big screen.
Director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic has pulled in a solid $30 million worldwide since its relaunch, bringing its total earnings to a whopping $433 million.
Over $100 million of that comes from theaters in the U.S., with the rest pouring in from overseas markets. Originally released in 2021 during the height of the pandemic, Dune wrapped up its initial run with just over $400 million globally, against a reported budget of $165 million.
This was a big win, especially considering the film was simultaneously released on HBO Max. However, this was not easy for Villeneuve. He faced some challenges with this strategy, which even led to Christopher Nolan parting ways with Warner Bros.
But Villeneuve stuck it out and got the green light for Dune: Part Two, with talk of a potential third film on the horizon. It’s worth noting that the re-release of Dune: Part 1 has outperformed Sweeney’s Madame Web by more than half at the box office, making it a significant success story.
Madame Web Fails To Impress Audiences At The Box Office
Madame Web didn’t hit it off at the box office, leaving folks unimpressed. Despite the hype, this Spider-Man side story had trouble pulling in crowds and didn’t quite hit the mark on the big screen.
The latest flick from Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Verse, Madame Web, tanked over the holiday weekend. Even with big names like Dakota Johnson, Sweeney, and Adam Scott, it only raked in $51 million worldwide.
Since its Valentine’s Day release, it’s only managed to scrape up $26 million domestically. That’s a far cry from Sony’s Morbius, which pulled in $39 million right out of the gate.
In Madame Web, we meet Cassandra Cassie Webb (played by Johnson), a young medic who discovers she’s got some psychic powers thanks to her spider-bitten mom. Despite not wanting to be a hero, she’s forced to protect three young women from a creepy villain who’s kind of like an evil Spider-Man.
Critics tore into the movie for its sloppy editing, clunky story, and slow-paced action scenes, giving it a dismal 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though Madame Web includes characters like Spider-Woman and Madame Web herself, who made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man comics, it doesn’t really connect to other Spider-Man movies or projects.
