We get it – everybody’s got busy schedules in between so if you have no time to rewatch the first movie, fret not – here is a complete rundown of the important events and characters from the 2021 film.

Here’s Everything That Happened In Dune: Part One

Adapted to the big screen from Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel, Dune has an unforgiving terrain. The scenic views alone radiate heat, thirst, and sandstorms.

Dune commences in a distant future with rival houses under the rule of an emperor. This universe’s most prized possession is spice melange, a hallucinogenic powder that can only be found on the desert planet Arrakis.

This planet is under the control of House Harkonnen. They harvest and cultivate the spice, and in response, the natives of the planet, the Fremen, push for resistance.

The narrative drives forward when the emperor tells the Harkonnen to depart the Arrakis as the job gets handed to the House Atreides. Now, fans will get some sense of rivalry here. Oscar Isaac’s Duke Leto Atreides is the head of this house, and his son, Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides is the heir and protagonist.

When the Atreides landed on Arrakis, they were shocked to witness a spice harvester get devoured by Shai-Hulud – a gigantic traveling sandworm that is attracted to rhythmic noises. In an interesting twist of fate, Paul inhaled the spice which made his visions of the future more vivid than ever.

A betrayal happened within the House Atreides, and their stronghold became an easy target for the Harkonnens. Because they were caught off-guard, the house was left to crumble. Paul and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica, his mother, managed to escape to the desert, while the Harkonnens are now in control again.

With the cliffhanger ending of 2021’s Dune, the seeming escape of Paul and Jessica from the capitol, and their confrontation with the Fremen, the protagonist has to learn the ways of the tribe both in combat and religious rituals.

The sequel expects to see Timothée Chalamet’s character lead the Fremen. Now that he is going to have his own army, there is a high chance that he will regain Arrakis from the Harkonnens and bring peace to the planet.
