Just when all hopes were at their end and fans had nearly given up on any updates about the Elden Ring DLC this month, FromSoftware reignited the hype that Shadow of the Erdtree truly deserves. Announcing the arrival of a gameplay trailer yesterday, the developer unleashed the new footage earlier today, and it looks better and grander than anyone could’ve imagined.

Combined with the recent comments by creator Hidetaka Miyazaki himself, the upcoming expansion is set to be the “largest” that FromSoftware has ever worked on, which seems quite evident from the latest action-packed look.

Speaking with Eurogamer about the massive Elden Ring DLC, Hidetaka Miyazaki talked about the huge scope of the expansion while also discussing other aspects, like how much input George R. R. Martin truly had in the narrative of Shadow of the Erdtree. There was plenty of new information provided by the creator, but one point stood out the most, as Miyazaki stated that the team has “also experimented with something a little more” when asked about the overall level design of the DLC.

In previous FromSoftware games and even the base version of Elden Ring itself, there was an obvious “divide between field and dungeon areas,” but the developer is now looking to mix things up for the Soulslike genre.

With Shadow of the Erdtree, Miyazaki and the crew are going “more in depth” as they try to make the level design of the upcoming DLC “denser and richer.” This should solve the aforementioned divide problem, as FromSoftware’s new technique will “bring these types of layout together a little more seamlessly.”

In order to provide an even more “diverse” overall experience than the base game, the expansion is set to be a lot more experimental than previously thought, complete with “large open areas” and “legacy dungeons.”

Shadow of the Erdtree Will Feature Over Ten Fresh Boss Battles

The new gameplay trailer may have been epic, but it apparently does not even scratch the surface of the massive expansion.

Along with the experimental elements that Shadow of the Erdtree is set to include, Miyazaki also revealed that the upcoming expansion will feature more than ten fresh boss battles, as the new gameplay trailer showcases some of them in all their brutal glory. That is not all, as the DLC will also bring a new variety of weapons and skills.

The FromSoftware President also had some great news for Malenia fans who enjoyed how difficult the boss fight truly was, as he stated that the expansion will also feature plenty of similar challenges that are “on equal footing” with the base game.

FromSoftware will finally release Shadow of the Erdtree on June 21.
