Messmer is going to play a pivotal role in the upcoming Elden Ring DLC.
Messmer is going to play a pivotal role in the upcoming Elden Ring DLC.

In an extended interview with IGN’s Mitchell Saltzman, Miyazaki revealed that Messmer is going to be a key figure in the upcoming DLC set to launch in June. The trailer introduced him wielding some form of black-red fire in his hand and a red snake by his side, both elements synonymous with Volcano Manor. He is also standing in a room that looks very much like the one Tanith inhabits, and behind him, we can see a throne-like chair.

Miyazaki confirmed in the interview,

People who’ve played the game may recognize this throne to be one of those from the boss room where you battle Morgott. And this represents the thrones at the base of the Erdtree. And it’s supposed to symbolize that Messmer stands on equal footing to these other demigods and children of Marika.

The Elden Ring DLC is focused on Miquella, a child of Queen Marika and Radagon, who is seen as a beacon of light in the other bleak and desolate realm that is The Lands Between. In the trailer, Messmer describes himself as one “bereft of light”, positioning him as the polar opposite of Miquella.

While we may get a better understanding of Miquella’s past and his whereabouts, the introduction of Messmer has the possibility of raising more questions than the DLC can answer. Would this mean another expansion is in the works? We can only hope.

Messmer Appears to Have Been Shunned by His Peers

Miyazaki also stated in the interview we will get to know why “he (Messmer) wasn’t featured in the legends of the Erdtree, the lands between.” Messmer has been described as a rival to the other demigods, and a few shots in the trailer show a Tarnished facing off against him using crucible incantations.

It could very well be that Messmer was some chaotic force that was trying to work against the bright future Miquella had planned for the world, and thus was to be dealt with as a threat. His snake companion also could link him to the God-Devouring Serpent, the being that Rykard fused with in a way to bring down the gods in Elden Ring.

With the DLC still a few months away, speculations are going to run wild as to where this narrative will lead. One thing is for sure, FromSoftware has stirred the fans into a frenzy and everyone is eagerly awaiting the new Elden Ring DLC.

What do you think Messmer’s role will be in the game? Let us know in the comments section below.
