Earlier this week, FromSoftware revealed the first trailer for Elden Ring‘s upcoming DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, and fans are yet to come down from the excitement that it created. There is the factor that DLC isn’t releasing until the 21st of June, but that hasn’t deterred fans much, as the trailer and first-look at the DLC were long overdue.
After dropping the mega trailer that looked as big as a separate game altogether, the legend behind Soulslike games and director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, sat down for an interview to answer several burning questions about the DLC and the path players can expect to take in the DLC.
Miyazaki Sets the Stage for Elden Ring’s Upcoming DLC
Elden Ring takes place in a fictional realm ruled by a plethora of demigods, named Lands Between. With the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, In a recent interview, Miyazaki revealed that the DLC will not take place in the same realm but will be set in an entirely new map, which he called, the Land of the Shadow, that is “overshadowed by the particular Shadow of the Erdtree“.
Speaking about the setting and themes expected to be explored in the DLC, Miyazaki revealed the realm will occupy the same spaces and will be in the same universe as Lands Between. He went on to state there are elements in the story that affect the new realm making it “physically disconnected“.
Miyazaki revealed he cannot reveal any more about those specific elements as he would like them to be a secret for now. He also stated that players will travel to the land of the Shadow of the Erdtree “as a separate place.” Explaining further, Miyazaki mentioned that Miquella will remain an important part of the story this time around in the DLC, as it was revealed in the trailer.
Ever since the DLC was announced with an artwork that revealed a character riding Torrent, the Spirit Stead, fans have long speculated about the possibilities of who it could be.
The Character Seen in the Shadow of the Erdtree Artwork is Miquella
Miyazaki mentioned that it is Miquella who traveled to the Land of Shadow and players will be “tracing his path and following in his footsteps” to figure out what Miquella is up to there. Players will also follow Queen Marika’s endeavors in the Land of Shadow and will get to know why Miquella followed the Queen there.
As for the structure of the new realm, Miyazaki confirmed that the Land of the Shadows will pretty much be similar to Lands Between which players are familiar with from the base game. Open field maps, large-scale legacy dungeons, and small and medium legacies in Land of the Shadows will all come together to give players a familiar setting and structure compared to Lands Between.
Miyazaki concluded by stating he hoped players would enjoy the “sense of scale and sense of adventure” as they play the DLC in a new but familiar structure. Shadow of the Erdtree releases on the 21st of June this year and is up for pre-order now for $40.
