As the community continues to enjoy and cherish Elden Ring, certain players have addressed their curiosity regarding the game’s immensely rich lore. There are tons of pages worth writing, and then some more, but a Reddit post has led to users lovingly explaining the story as quickly and precisely as they can.
Elden Ring’s narrative has the potential to turn into multiple different works of literary art, but having to sum up the entire story can be… well, challenging. Worry not! We’ll try to cover things within the short article, with important points of reference you can dive into later on.
What Exactly Happened in the World of Elden Ring, and Why Are We Here?
The Lands Between is a massive landscape that covers a lot of ground. There are broken castles, angry dragons, spirits, and everything in between. A Reddit post tried to address the very question about what’s going on, where user LynxThat stated their worry:
I really love this game, but I have no idea what’s going on. I’ve tried to follow dialogues, speak to NPCs, the finger crones and others but whenever I think I’m starting to get the picture, the story evades me..
So, here’s the deal. About a few centuries ago, The Lands Between saw Queen Marika (a name you may have heard of often) as the goddess. As the almighty, she appointed Lord Godfrey as the first Elden Lord, whose job it was to be her consort. Due to certain twists and turns, she exiled Godfrey and his followers, leading them down a path unknown.
It’s important to remember that followers of Godfrey were called Tarnished (yes, your kind), who followed him into oblivion, eventually leading to death and demise. And all kinds of wars and battles. However, the twist here is that Marika promised the Tarnished that they’d come back to life, with our ‘grace‘ restored. That’s when players finally find themselves in the wake of all that’s happening in Elden Ring.
The World as We Find It, and Things That Happened in the Midst of Our Deep Slumber
As you may have seen and felt, everything in The Lands Between looks like a mess. And there’s a reason for that. You see, while your consciousness was pretty much dead, Marika broke the Elden Ring, causing the Shattering. This was an apocalyptic event that broke into the world in some sense. Apparently, Marika did this as a result of the grief she faced when her son Godwyn was murdered.
Unlike an actual ‘ring,’ the Elden Ring is the combination of different powers often represented by Great Runes. You know, the stuff bosses drop when you slay them and feel all warm and powerful? Another thing to keep in mind is that people don’t truly die in The Lands Between, and there’s a mysterious narrative surrounding the idea of an afterlife.
Hence, battles and wars kept raging. There’s a lot more to all of this, and we highly recommend checking out VaatiVidya’s take on Elden Ring’s lore.
Coming back to the present, you, the player, are here to mend the Elden Ring. In order to do so, you’ll need to face all kinds of enemies. From simple creatures to Shardbearers, everyone stands in the way of your ultimate quest, and well, that’s the basis of the game’s narrative.
Hopefully, this gives you a basic idea of what’s going on in the world and hypes you enough for Shadow of the Erdtree. However, it would be best to keep diving into the lore and exploring all the small and big stories that make the world feel so historic. What are your thoughts on the game’s lore?
