One year after its release on February 25, 2022, Elden Ring skyrocketed to success, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. This achievement brought immense joy to Miyazaki.
The game also experienced immense success in Japan. It sold over one million copies in Japan alone within a month, making it FromSoftware’s best-selling game debut in the country.
Reflecting on this accomplishment, Miyazaki said:
I’ve had the chance to hear the name of Elden Ring many times, not only at work but from people I encounter in daily life, and remember feeling, ‘It feels amazing to sell a million copies.’
Ultimately, Miyazaki and his team strive to create games that resonate with players, are enjoyable, and give them a sense of accomplishment. The insanely positive reception of Elden Ring reaffirmed their efforts while becoming a driving force.
Glimpsing into the Future with Shadow of the Erdtree
It’s no secret how commercially successful ER is, but it also holds a special place in many people’s hearts for its captivating gameplay, intense lore, and memorable environments. It wouldn’t be a bold claim to say beforehand that Shadow of the Erdtree will, in its way, give us another unforgettable experience.
Miyazaki revealed that development for the DLC began after the release of the main title and initial patches. Shadow of the Erdtree promises to delve deeper into the lore of the base game, exploring the Land of Shadow and the history of Queen Marika.
The FromSoftware genius emphasized that the DLC would offer a significant expansion to the game, stating, “It is no mistake to say that this is our biggest DLC ever.” He teased new weapons, spells, and weapon arts, along with challenging new bosses like the lion dance.
Despite the DLC’s sizable volume, Miyazaki expressed his desire to continue creating games on the scale of Elden Ring. He noted:
The staff and everyone probably feel the same, but we want to take advantage of this experience we had with Elden Ring, but rather than that and above all, creating huge worlds and adventures is amazingly fun. It thrills me.
The man knows what he’s doing, and the community can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
