Elden Ring is one of the most popular open-world role-playing games out there. So much so that it was even awarded the Game of the Year award back in 2022. The biggest reason behind such a positive reception of this title is its lore. The story never stops unfolding. FromSoftware is known for its incredible environmental storytelling and very detailed worlds with years of backstories, and this is one of the reasons people just can’t stop falling for their games.

Keeping in line with this continuously unfolding story, it looks like someone has found something interesting. A popular YouTuber has done a lot of research and found out the origin of Torrent, the horse!

Elden Ring players can finally know the origin of their trusty steed!

Tarnished and Torrent in Elden Ring
Torrent is the Player’s Closest Friend in Elden Ring

Torrent the Spirit Steed is a horse that players get when they reach an important landmark in Elden Ring. To get him, players just have to visit the “Gatefront Ruins” and speak to Melina at the site of grace there. She gives players the Spectral Steed Whistle that they can use to call on Torrent at any time.

He has a white mane and two small horns, and he looks as glorious as any horse has the right to be. he can double jump, and he can also be called back if someone or something kills him amidst combat. He is no doubt a bundle of wonders, but where did he come from? What is his origin story?

If Youtuber FranklyGaming is correct in their research, he belongs to a family of very glorious ancestors. The first clue to his origin was given to fans when they first met Ranni. She hands players the spirit-calling bell and explains that it was given to her by Torrent’s last owner. This means she knew them, and since Melina has the whistle, this means she knew them too. But FranklyGaming finds one more connection to Torrent in the game world: the ancestor spirit.

They mention that boss and the description of the remembrance of the Regal ancestor. It suggests that the ancestor Spirit, as well as any other inhabitant of the Siofera River, is living between life and death. This means they do not die, or they can’t die, but the ancestor Spirit boss that resides there can die, and so can Torrent. They even have many similarities in design and sound. When Torrent double jumps, he makes the same chiming sound as the ancestor spirit.

This has led to the belief that maybe Torrent is a juvenile ancestor spirit. And he has come out to help the Tarnished not because he wants to, but because he has his own mission going on. Maybe FromSoftware would also shed some more light on this in Shadow of the Erdtree, or maybe fans just have to dig a little more.

It looks like no one helps the player without a cause in Elden Ring

It’s an interesting theory that lines up with everything that happens in Elden Ring at all times. Melina helps players only because she is on a mission of her own. Ranni helps the players for her own reasons. And finally, Torrent, probably every player’s best friend in the game, is also there because he needs something from them.

It might just be that fans have not yet uncovered what he wants. There are two ancestor Spirit bosses in the game; one is the normal one, while the other is the Regal kind. Maybe the answer to Torrent’s mission lies in those boss fights.
