Provided to you as a part of Ranni’s never-ending questline in Elden Ring, the Moonlight Greatsword is one of the most incredible heavy-hitting Intelligence weapons capable of dealing lethal damage to opponents. However, what you might know is that this legendary weapon has a lore that predates everything made by game director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Moonlight Greatsword’s Lore in FromSoftware Games

The Moonlight Greatsword has always been a staple in FromSoftware’s titles and was first showcased in King’s Field in 1994. Since then, the developers have included the iconic weapon in their popular games, from Armored Core to Dark Souls. So, it’s no surprise that we might be able to use it in the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Three years after its first appearance in King’s Field, the sword was found in the first Armored Core game as the LS-99-Moonlight. Despite the sword being one of the long-running easter eggs across FromSoftware’s titles, it’s best known for its appearance in the Soulsborne series.

Moonlight Greatsword then appeared in Ninja Blade in 2009, and just a week later, it was featured in Demon’s Souls as the Large Sword of Moonlight. The sword was also featured in the original Dark Souls game two years later, called the Moonlight Greatsword. The sequel also featured the sword, which had the exact same name, and a fake copy, called the Bluemoon Greatsword.

The iconic weapon popped up again in Dark Souls 3; however, obtaining it was quite challenging and tedious. While the weapon didn’t surface again in Sekiro, it featured in Elden Ring and Armored Core 6.

This isn’t the only Souls staple originating from previous FromSoftware titles. Another prime example is Patches, which is the bald trickster that often pushes you into dangerous holes, all while promising you some loot.
