Ever since Fallout’s successful TV show adaptation dropped on Prime Video, the world has been jumping into the game, and the numbers are living proof of it. Unlike Starfield, close to 85,000 players have been exploring a massive post-apocalyptic open world in the last 24 hours.
It feels unreal. Especially since Fallout 4 has been out for almost a decade now and has significantly more players compared to Bethesda’s latest project. So, why is this happening? Well, the incredible TV show surely takes the cake here.
Welcoming Players Back to a Familiar World
The game launched all the way back in 2015. This was the time when expectations were high, given how successful Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas were. When Fallout 4 finally arrived, most people adored the game for everything it had to offer but also admitted how the game lacked a lot of charm the older games had.
Ever since, it’s been a track record for Bethesda to come out with content that tries to stay original to its roots but also creatively experiments with new ways of telling a story. The Elder Scrolls games shared a similar fate, and even with the success of Skyrim, multiple players keep going back to the good ol’ days of Morrowind.
Interestingly, the arrival of the TV show shifted gears a little. More and more players are coming back to the game, and newcomers are experiencing the rich and broken world of Fallout 4. Cleverly, Bethesda has also kept an impressive 75% off on the game at the time of writing.
The question remains: could other games share a similar fate and bring new (and old) players back into the experience?
Could Starfield Attract More Players in the Same Way?
At first glance, Starfield can be any kind of sci-fi experience you’d like it to be. Whether you’re a space pirate, an enthusiastic pilot, an adventurer, or a faithful citizen, the list goes on. Unfortunately, as promising as that may sound at first, the game simply lacks the depth that will keep you there for hours.
In our review of the game, this was quite prominent, and a similar journey is shared by millions who gave the game a shot but simply failed to stay with it in the long run. Still, there’s a small chance that new players who haven’t tried the game before can find it exactly what they need.
Transmedia storytelling is one such way of attracting people to a video game. Both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls are massive games that have endless stories to tell. Whether it’s through a book, a movie, or a TV show. When these mediums take hold, video games automatically attract a larger player base.
