Recently, there has been a lot of leaked information going around the internet due to a recent ransomware attack on Insomniac Games. Unfortunately, these leaks aren’t just small pieces of information related to a specific game; they are full of information regarding future game releases, project budgets and sales, and even more shockingly, the personal information of employees.
In any industry, there will always be those who want to leak information to sooth their need for information; however, those who attacked Insomniac Games have sadly taken it too far by stealing its employees personal information and asking for a ransom to keep this information private.
Unfortunately, for many, if not all, of the employees who work at Insomniac Games, they were unable to pay off this ransom, and their personal information was shared with the world in what could be described as one of the most disrespectful and disgraceful acts of information leakage that we have seen in a very long time.
What Information Has Been Leaked Regarding Gaming Assets, and Why Has This Made Such an Impact on Insomniac Games?
For obvious reasons, we will not be discussing any of the leaked personal information of the Insomniac employees; however, we will discuss some of the gaming assets that have been leaked due to this ransomware attack and how it has been such a harmful and disgraceful act by the hacker.
As stated above, leaks in the gaming industry are always expected, whether they be within the company or someone who has somehow gained access to game files through hacking into the company or by having some kind of internal contact.
However, this ransomware attack has taken these leaks a fair bit too far, as full gameplay clips have been revealed for games like Marvel’s Wolverine, which is still being developed. It has even gone as far now as Marvel’s Wolverine is getting a lot of attention from the gaming community, as players are wondering what kind of game it will be and whether it will take Marvel’s Spider-Man crown as the best recent superhero game.
The shameful part of this is that the game developers have been working very hard on games like Marvel’s Wolverine and have purposely kept gameplay and trailers from appearing to the public, but now they have been leaked and have already met some criticism from the game’s respective fan bases.
Sadly, this has caused a lot of problems for Insomniac Games, as players are experiencing an early build of Marvel’s Wolverine game and are already giving their opinions. This ultimately will cause a lot of shifting within Insomniac Games, as Marvel’s Wolverine game will most likely be pushed back in an effort to spend more time on it and perfect it.
This isn’t the only game that has been leaked due to this ransomware attack, as information regarding Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, an upcoming Ratchet and Clank sequel, and other Marvel-based games has also been leaked, along with the budgets that these games will be using and their expected sales and profits.
Was This Ransomware Attack Against Insomniac Games Worth All the Trouble It Has Caused?
For those who enjoy seeing leaked content for games, this ransomware attack could be considered worth it in that regard. However, since it has been used to attack Insomniac Games’ employees as well as reveal information that won’t be needed for another 5–10 years, it can be considered a complete waste of time and effort by the hacker.
Especially since this ransomware attack has now caused a lot of issues in the gaming community, Sony and Insomniac Games are a lot more protective over their information. This means that casual interactions between the media and these companies are now on a very thin line, as both Sony and Insomniac Games are dissatisfied with this leaked information being even further published to the public.
At the moment, there have been no official announcements from Sony or Insomniac Games regarding any media outlets, but if these leaks persist, it is very likely that action could be taken against any media company that goes beyond a certain boundary.
Unfortunately, the main issue with this ransomware attack is the fact that they have attacked the company’s employees by threatening to release their personal information. Since the employees did not bow down to the hacker, their personal information was sadly leaked to the public, causing the employees to have to completely change things like emails, banking information, phone numbers, and in some cases even their family information.
For many reasons, this is incredibly disgraceful and has caused a lot of Insomniac Games’ employees to completely change certain aspects of their lives to avoid any negative consequences. So far, luckily, there have been no issues for these employees besides having to change some of the private information above.
How Will Sony and Insomniac Games React to This Ransomware Attack, and How Will It Affect the Rest of the Gaming Industry?
So far, there hasn’t been a lot said from Sony and Insomniac Games regarding this ransomware attack, but since this is a major attack against both the company and its employees, there will most likely be a major investigation to attempt to capture the culprit of this ransomware attack.
Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that the hacker(s) will be caught, but the one good thing that has come out of this ransomware attack is that Insomniac Games will most likely be looking towards upgrading its hacker prevention software to ensure that situations like this never happen again.
