The makers of Loki deserve all the plaudits. After the horrendous run that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been going through, season 2 of Loki breathed fresh life into the franchise. That is more than what Kevin Feige and co. could have hoped for in these difficult times. Much of the credit goes to Eric Martin, executive producer and head writer of Season 2. Martin himself attributes this success to his clear philosophy of what he wanted to do with the God of Mischief – or rather god of Mischief. To turn him into a new ‘God’.
Loki has come a long way in the MCU
Loki has had quite the character development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has come a long way – from trying to wipe out the city of New York just out of spite for his brother to giving the ultimate sacrifice for the multiverse.
In the finale, the character played by Tom Hiddleston went into the temporal loom, grabbed all the strings of time and space, and weaved into a Yggdrasil-styled tree – his new throne. Who didn’t fall in love with this transformation?
Eric Martin’s vision for Loki came true with the series finale
The credit for this goes in no small part to Eric Martin, the man behind season 2 of Loki. It must have been quite the ride for him. After numerous sleepless nights and innumerable skirmishes with deadlines, it has all come full circle with the conclusion of one of the most satisfying character arcs.
In an interview with Esquire’s Brady Langmann, he opened up about what he had in mind for the show. And how he went about completing this task. One of the central themes that he discussed was the character’s achievement (or rather sacrifice).
How did Loki rightfully earn the title of God
For the head writer, this was the season where Loki would enter a new chapter of his life. And he did it in quite some style. When asked what was going on in Martin’s mind, he replied,
“The big idea was taking Loki from a lowercase-g god, to a capital-G God, powering him up to that place where he gets his throne.” (Esquire)
Another reason why he has really leveled up is that this throne is not something he had always wanted. It was a sacrifice. He continued,
“This is a duty. He’s doing this so everyone else can have their lives. He’s giving up the thing that he wants most so that everyone else can have their free will… We wanted to power up his abilities, but also his wisdom and knowledge.”
That is why he has become a real God.
